HEY NYROC

Hey nemmeh could you email me that word document about the belt and shims. I am taking on the task this weekend and would love to have some detailed explanations.

nemmeh,
dude it wont let me in there and i really need the help fast because i have everything torn clear down to the shim, i just cant get it off of there. he!!
, maybe i'm confused on what the shim is. i'm pretty sure that i know what it is. its the thing that bolted in between the sheeves right?
NovaKaw650,
i've already got to the part where i have pulled the sheeves apart. on nyrocs page, the next step #8 just says "remove or add shims" i'm pretty dumb when it comes to things like this. i'm one of those people who need "specific" instructions and/or pictures. ANY replies are greatly appreciated because i need to finish this and get the thing back together.

another thing is how in the world areyou supposed to get those four steel buttons back in where they belong? (the ones that you pop out with a screw driver to be able to get the pulleys apart)

whoa whoa whoa, hang on a second here...
If you have the 4 steel buttons out and the sheaves pulled apart. There shouldn't be anything holding on the shim. It just slides off like a washer. If that is not happening, then you do not have any shims to take out. I know what you are seeing, when you pull those sheaves apart. On the one with the shaft, you are seeing a slightly raised metalic piece. That isn't a shim, that is a piece of the sheave itself. That doesn't come off. The shims shoulda just dangled off the shaft when you took the sheaves apart.
If you didn't have any shims that just came off like that, then you don't have any to remove and if your belt is out of deflection, welp. Time for you to buy a new belt and some shims.
I don't have a picture of the sheaves pulled apart, but I know what you're seeing. Because the first time I pulled them apart off came a .8MM shim and a .6MM shim (look like washers), then right below that it looked as though one was stuck on there. That is actually a part of the sheave, that doesn't come off.

That document is 600kb in size, if you need it.. grab it. I will be revising it shortly so that it is more detailed with more pictures.
rammy, take a look at the pic below. This pic is also included in the document.
This is a picture of the shims that just practically slide off.. you don't have to pry them off when you pull the sheaves apart.. They just slide off that shaft. I will restate this one more time, so it is clear. If you did not have any shims just slide off... I'm 99.9% certain that you do not have any shims whatsoever, in which case you'll need to buy a new belt and some shims.

Hey nemmeh that document you made is great. i just have one question the shims that are down in the system, do you replace all of those or just a few?
I explain this pretty good in that document, if you really take the time to read it all the way through.
Ok, so let's say I took my measurement and it was 33mm. Well, I follow NYROC/Nemmeh instructions and I find that I have two shims in there from factory. Two 0.6mm shims. Well, NYROC states as a rule of thumb for every .1mm of shim thickness you remove, you decrease that deflection measurement by 1.3mm. Therefore, if i remove both 0.6mm shims I would decrease the deflection measurement by 15.6MM. So 33MM - 15.6MM = 17.4MM THIS is clearly below the spec and tells me I can't remove both. But if I just remove one of the 0.6MM shims and leave the other one in there. Then I will only reduce the deflection measurement by 7.8mm.
Original Measurement - Change in Shims = New Deflection
33MM - 7.8MM = 25.2MM
Thus we find that removing one 0.6MM shim clearly puts the belt within spec. We put everything back together and we're good to go.
Note - Every 650 is different, I have no idea and there is no way to tell what shims you have in there from factory until you actually pull it all apart. In this example, if we would have only had a 1.4MM shim in there and no others. We would not be able to do a deflection adjustment, because if we removed the 1.4MM shim it would decrease the deflection by 18.2MM which would put us below spec.
This is the reason it is advised you purchase extra shims of varying sizes from your dealer or from ronayers.com
1.4MM - Part# 92026-1570
1.0MM - Part# 92026-1565
0.8MM - Part# 92026-1617
0.6MM - Part# 92026-1569
These are the 4 sizes available for purchase for the 650.
Basically you take your original measurement, then find out what size shims you already have in there. You then determine what shims need to be added or removed to get you within spec.
It is just simple math, just think about what you are wanting to do.
If you are just totally lost after reading NYROC instructions, mine and these few posts. My advice would be to have a friend do it or a dealer or someone. Just think about what you're wanting to do and it shouldn't have any problems.

nemmeh,
ok i think i figured out the shim thing. i only had one shim in there and i removed it because my belt squeels on takeoff. now, how do you get those little steel buttons back where they belong?

Ok, did you mark the sheaves with a marker before you took them apart? NYROC instructions stated to do so.
I'm hoping you did... Well, you just realign those sheaves so the markings match up.
Download the belt shim document and read step 14.
Explains it at the bottom.

This all matters, you can't just remove any size shim without taking measurements or you're asking for more trouble than you know.
You have to know your original deflection measurement and the size of the shim you removed.
You might have removed a 1.4mm shim which could adjust the belt waaaaaayyyyy too tight. It really matters, so find out what you removed.
Grab a ruler with a MM increment and see how thick the shim is.
