How was I to know, and especially the dealer, that the main jets in the Prairie are the slotted and not the hex jets. I bought the hex jet and noticed when I took the float bowl off that the main jet in the Prairie is the slotted jet. I tried the hex jet, but it stuck out too far. I got the float bowl screws off pretty easy, using a ratchet and a phillips head in a socket. But in putting the screws back in, I may have stripped the head a little. I need to go ahead and replace the Phillips head screws with allen head screws. Anyone know the size and where you can get them? Preferrably the high carbon ones that will not strip. Thanks.

Haynes, I read in the archives where some tried 4x10mm or 4x12mm, but Sargent said they were a little short for him and he was going to try 4x14mm. I never saw a response to where he stated if that size was better or not. If he tried 4x10mm and they were too short and you are using 4x8mm, are these carbs a little different?

Just did mine yesterday (2002 Prairie 650), my Lowes does not sell allen head bolts any longer (go figure), so I went to Home Depot. They are 4x14, but they only stock 4x12 or 4x16; I got the 4x12 and they are fine, but the 4x16 I think would be a little easier to deal with.
Dropped the 142 jet out of the back carb, went down between the back of the tranny and the motor, will fall out on the trail sometime, but now I need to go pick up a 142 jet for the front carb. The hardest part of the whole thing is the stupid little brass screws, why can't they use an allen head at the factory, make the techs and our lives a little easier. I ended up stripping out 3 of the 8 and having to use needle nose vise grips to "convince" them. Needless to say, this ruins the screw.
Did find out I was running stock jets 142r 138f for altitude of 5200'! Since I have modified the snorkle, put 3 vents in the lid of the airbox, and did the Nyroc mod on the pipe, it has been running a little lean, so hopefully this will fix it and not make it all jacked up!
