This tells me that the float is stuck or needle valve, the choke wouldn't put gas in the cyclinder if the motor wasn't running.

A stuck open choke (fuel enrichener piston) will fill a cylinder with gas when the machine not running. I don't know how the circuitry works, but I think it also has something to do with pressure build-up in the gas tank feeding the carbs and therefore the enrichener circuit. Happened to me several times before I had the new return springs put in, gas actually dripped out of the choke cable at the splitter! Read about it happening to several others on the forum, too.

I don't think it would run if the choke was stuck open, he said when it warmed up it would run good.

Mine would run OK, but you could tell something wasn't quite right. It always started good. I kept smelling gas in the building, and had the machine lock up twice from gas in the cylinder. I finally found the gas dripping out of the choke cable where the one cable split into two cables. The dealer's tech said he had never seen that before, I should bring it in. A couple of days later when I took it in, he had another 650 in the shop that was doing the exact same thing! He pulled the two machines apart, cleaned the choke pistons and put in the new springs - problem fixed. This was over a year ago, when the choke problem first started to show up.

Does anyone know if Kawasaki is fixing this problem under warrenty? Seems that alot of people are hiving the same problem. My machine, when cold will backfire through the air filter if you so much as touch the gas. Also it seems to sputter right off idle, then clear up within 5 mph. This is rather annoying when in deep mud or going slow through water.

RoadRashRon.... that sounds like an idle circuit adjustment.

Idle circuit? How do I adjust it? Is it the idle adjustment? When I turn the idle up, in gear the machine jerks from the belt engaging. I have the stock spring back in the front clutch. My belt has 1500 or so miles on it and seems to be fine.

THere are three circuits in type carb we are talking about....with some overlap of course

In general....

Idle circuit covers from idle to about 25% throttle ------------ adjusted by screws on bottom of bowls
intermediate .... the needles.... covers from 25% to about 75% throttle ... adjusted by washers.. inside carb
power circuit ... the jets .... covers from 75% to full throttle..... adjusted by changing jets... removing bowls.

So .... the hesitation you described was while coming off idle..... you should be able to adjust that out with the screws in the bottom of the bowls.. most likely needs about 1/2 turn out...( a little more fuel )
( you are right about not raising the idle speed ..... not good for the tranny to do that )

for more specific help on carb .... or any part of the P650, check out NYRocs' page
