1. Has anyone needed a power tune up?
2. Has anyone heard of a power tune up?
3. Did anyone ever un carbon their 650?
4. Has anyone had engine work done on any warrenty?
5. What did it cost and the milage on your bike?
I'M NOT HAPPY WITH WHAT I'M HEARING AND I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED ON PROGRESS WHEN FACTS ARE HERE!

Jason, sorry I can't help more, but the only time I have heard of someone de-carboning an engine was someone selling some product. They claimed that this product when poured into a running engine would decarbonize the cyls. I saw it done to a car, and the only thing I could tell was that it was pouring smoke out the exhaust! Sounds like a scam to me. I take it that your dealer is telling you this? Good luck man, let us know how it turns out.

They could try to de-carbon it with the intention of cleaning the valves and possibly freeing up stuck rings. Not likely to fix it but they could try. If they balk at a rebuild, if decarbonizing doesn't help, start screaming Better Business Bureau. Maybe everyone that's had a problem with warranty coverage should notify the BBB at the same time. That would guarantee Kawasaki some attention that they really don't want.
Jason, tell us what you know so far.

Hi guys I can not mention much yet but I will let you know when I can.... PS THIS IS NOT GOOD!! and yes my bike is at an authorized Kawi dealer and the Kawi rep hasn't called me back etc.... For the guys that haven't seen my other post My 650 will not start it is about 30 pounds of compression and going thru 600 ml of oil and it only has 760hrs and 15000km on it. I also had carb issues and overheating issues in breakin periods. Also it never ran low on oil and rad was always cleaned and airfilter was kept clean and air box was always cleaned. BTW a power tune up consists of pulling the bike to peices to clean out carbon and replace valves plungers etc... and it is as of right now my understanding that this is part of regular maintance and not covered under extended warrenty and requires about 9 hours of shop time plus parts plus GST. More later.

a couple of things..
sounds like valves are not seating, if it was running, I'd try some yamaha ring free in it, it is a chemical that goes in the gas and frees up sticking rings, cleans intake, etc.. I've heard of it raising compression by about 20 lbs or so, maybe a little more..possibily the decompression is stuck as well, that would be the easy place to start. I don't consider a "power up" tune up to be routine maintenance, but if they so deem, maybe some ring free on a regular basis, or maybe techron, would do the trick..sorry for the problems, keep posted of the outcome..

The fact that their bone stock prairie caused the engine to carbon and rings to fail is a pure defect, whether its in design or manufacture....it seems clear as day to me. ALL you did was ride and maintain the bike as the manual suggested.....
If your dealer is trying to get you to float the bill (by the way, they get paid a LOT more if you pay them than if Kaw pays them for warranty work, I'd make more effort to get a hold of the kawi rep. Keep standing your ground - on a basic level, your quad is under warranty and the engine died.....how much more simple can it get?
Editamn I didn't see those mods you had. That could be a problem. Easily they could say (and could be the reality) that your jetting changes caused a rich condition causing all the carbon buildup. I for one would have surely returned everything to stock before bringing it to ANY dealer, auto, atv, etc...thats just common sense if you have a warranty.

Jason, did you check your owner's manual? There's no such thing as a "power tune-up" in the maintenance schedule.

I've been a full time tech at a good sized Honda - Bombardier dealer for 17 years full time now, and I've NEVER heard of a "power tuneup" before. What the #$^@ is that? ALL the mfgs. do things by scheduled maintainance. I read your previous post also. It should be no surprise your engine is all sooted up as much oil as it's been burning. Likely something accelerated the ring wear and the main two culprits are foreign matter ingestion, or lack of lubrication. Unless they are softer rings like on motox bikes, but for them ring replacement is ON the maintainance chart, can't believe that's the case with that quad. I have done mucho warranty work, and sometimes you can kinda get an idea as to what the case is. Such as finding lots of curded up watery oil in crankcase webbings, or the intake side of the carb all beat up and dirty. Or constantly bumping the temp light on and off could have scuffed things a bit and started it. If so there should be scuff marks on the exhaust side of the piston and cylinder. If it's been run a long time drinking oil the best evidence may be gone. Believe it or not, a lot of factory service reps aren't that sharp mechanically. A good tech guy could inspect your parts and give you a good idea what happened tho. I hope you can get it covered, but a problem like this is a tough sell even to OE factory warranties, much less afermarket extended ones. Your airbox, filter and carb mods don't help your case either. You sure put the miles on tho, Kawi should cover it for that reason alone. Good luck!
