Napa Hose Part #
#11
AJ, I don't know anymore about the hose I just got the part #off this forum when I bought mine.
I have tried the ram air thing too. I drilled 5 univents holes in the plastic piece in front of the snorkle, I had it this way for a couple of weeks, it does let a lot more cool air into the system, with a clean filter I gained 1 mph on top end.
but I took mine off because of dust dirt issues. I went riding 70 miles on a day with some dust, but not what I would call overly dusty. I had goggles on and was fine.
However my air filter got so dirty and covered in dust that toward the end of the day at high rpm's the bike could not get enoght air and sucked oil from the engine breathing tube into the engine! The first
time I thought I had blew the bike up blue smoke came out the back and it was sputtering. If you don't ride in very dusty conditions you might be ok with this ram air mod, but after that experience, I just ordered a new plastic piece (about $3) and took the ram air off.

Of all the mods I've done, shop-vac hose, unifilter, muffler, and rejetting the thing that made the biggest difference was the shop vac hose. It didn't help top end but it sure woke it up off idle up to about 3/4 speed. As it turns out this was also the cheapest. Zero out of pocket expenses. I cut a 10" section out of the hose and spliced the rest back together with duct tape. Only problem with doing this is you lose the water trap built in to the stock snorkle. Hey but where I live water is a non issue.
Letcher brings up a great point about drilling the airbox. Drilling the air box will only allow hot air from around the engine in and this can't help performance. I guess you could remove the plastic covering the air box lid but it would look like hammered dog doo-doo and be unacceptably loud for the rider.
Want another cheap mod idea? Completely remove the snorkle cover in front of the handle bars. It lets in more cool air and the ram air effect is good for extra 3mph top end on my bike.

Spliced in a shop vac hose section to side of snorkel and siliconed, and pop rivet in place. The motor comes on real strong and then falls on it face. Had to rejet to 142/145, then chopped the muffler, it runs a lot better on low to mid range. You can wheelie quicker and farther now.

Stack: you miserable son of a b!chu. No seriously, note the smiley face at the end. I know you didn't mean any offense, and if I was that easily offended, I'd never survive in my line of work.
Napa had to order part #7335, supposed to be at the shop first thing in the morning. So what needs to be done to install this little item? What plastic needs removed...

New to forum, and dont want to beat this topic to death, but intrigues me. Mostly my 03 is a worker. This napa mod seems like sheer genious.
Order the hose and swap out the top breather? That easy?
thanks, CWG

I installed a napa hose on my bike. I had to trim it a little bit to fit perfectly. I then driled a hole in the front radiator cover and it pointed up. Then bought a rubber pvadapter from H-depot (go stewart) Then slipped on a 2 inch piece of PVC going up then a 180 pointing down. It works good. Only problem is the radiator cap is hard to get to. Has anyone done a snorkel for the belt? I seem to soak the belt way before get's into the motor.

Sir mill i have cause the mud cost me a new belt so i thought it was money well spent. Also aj650 this is another reason for me to justify the hose cause you can add more pipe for a snorkel. Witch in my case it was to late before i did this mod. sir mill pm me your email and i mybe exchange pic's of snorkels. I only done mine with 1 1/2" hose. It also made it run a little richer so i would like to put a bigger hose on.

Took longer to take the plastic off carefully than cut and fit the hose. The most dangerous part was taking the spring outta the hose.
No real test, but a put around "felt" better 15-25 than it did two hours prior with the same warm up. A little louder too, so I know its getting more air. Easy mod, thanks for posting.
I am looking for screening that is waterproof but would certainly let more air in than the plastic cover. A marine shop thats now gone had bronze filter screening that would be perfect to let some air in, but not let water do a "ram air" effect if I got in the rain or behind a roostertail.
Cool easy mod, THATS the way we like 'em!
I left the stock air filter alone for now, I get a lot of dust in the summer and I have K&N filters on tractors and whatnot- they load up too quickly.
