Default 2003 Sportsman 90 shuts off when rear brake applied

Hello
My son's Sportsman 90 is designed to start only if the left brake lever is applied. However, lately if you apply more than moderate pressure while trying to start it , the motor just cranks and doesn't run. When it is running, the same amount of pressure causes the motor to shut off. What might be causing this and how do I fix it?

Thanks for your help.

Just saw this and don't know if you found the problem. Your stator is weak and the power it takes to light the bulb is taking away from the ignition. I took my flywheel off and cleaned everything and it was fixed. Hope this helps.
