Wireless headset / microphone system..
#1
My 9 year old son & I do lots of Quad riding in our rough and muddy trails. My son has a Polaris Pred-90 and I have a Arctic Cat 500i - both with stock muffler systems. One of my Quad buddies suggested we obtain a wireless headset / microphone system - to increase our safety. One suggested brand is Collett Platinum 9000 from:

Just wondering if anyone has experience with this brand / model? If not, is there other brands I should also be investigating?
thanks for your feedback...

I've used the Collett communicators for years. Started out with the 49mhz which performed OK, although the antenna design was prone to trail damage. Moved up to the 900mhz about two years ago - Now we have 6 900mhz units, 3 of the older style and 3 of the platinum 900.
The radios work well and I consider them 'must have' equipment for kids riding on the trail. While the voice activated system is not really made for just idle chatter, we use the radios for essential trail information. Let's face it - If you are riding on a single file size trail and you need to get your kid to stop before running into some kind of trail hazzard that's beyond his driving skills, how are you going to do it? Our Collett radios work very well within a mile and will transmit/receive much more than that but it depends on the terrain and temperature. Rechargable batteries will last for severial rides and the radios themselves are very durable. Over the years we have had a couple of repair needs - pulled antennas or broken wires at connectors - all covered by the three-year parts/labor warrantee. Just send the radio back and they will have it fixed in a couple of weeks, all we were out was postage. BTW, the new design of the platinum 900 looks like it will almost eliminate any of the potential trail damage points of the older units.
Check the Collett website, as they often have specials of bulk purchases or demo units. The last three we bought were about $130 each vs the regular $180 as they were demo units used at trade shows. they look and perform as brand new.
You can order by phone and usually get your stuff in about a week and a half or two.

Dwayne,
We have complete systems with 5 watt radio that include: handheld radio, antenna, charger, helmet wiring, harness between radio rider and handlebar, and velcro mounted ptt. these complete systems are $395. We also sell the same kit above that hooks up to your own FRS or Family radio for $189. In my opinion family radios are just one step above a childrens walkee talkee and you will have much better communications with the 5 watt unit. The family radios are only one half a watt of power. Our systems are used in off-road racing and are tested and superior to anything else on the market. Thanks for your interest.

Many thanks for your experienced feedback.
I've sent inquires to each company and we'll see what they come back with. re: Price, availablity, conversion of dollars, taxes, etc. If wondering, the Jury is still out - regarding which model to pick. If Santa is really good to us this year, we may have a 2 x wireless units under our tree. We'll see....
Again, thanks for your brand suggestions and experienced feedback with each...
