Default 2001 Scrambler 90

Hey all, I just picked up a scrambler for my son and it keeps cutting out under load. Should i take the carb off and clean it myself or just take it to a polaris dealer and have them go through the whole quad? The injector doesn't work either and the previous owner mixed his own gas using cheap walmart oil. I will go get polaris oil myself. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

The carbs are very simple and easy to work on. We pull ours all the time, usually find crap (sand grain) in the Jet causing problems. You could also have jetting problems. Do a plug read, if it is black, you are too rich. Too rich means you are not getting enough air (dirty air filter could be cause) or too much gas (go to smaller jet). Proper plug should be beer bottle brown. If it is real light (white) you are too lean and need to go to a larger jet size, giving more gas (doubt this is the problem though.) I would start by checking the plug, then pulling the carb apart. It could just need a new plug.

Don't worry about the oil pump, they will all go sooner or later, then you fry an engine. Make sure it is disconnected from ther carb (plug hole to carb with something, might be the problem as well), and use premix 32:1. We use Maxima 727, and works great (don't mix the 727 with other premix, drain tank first if going this route)

These things are real easy to work on, and the dealer is timely and expensive IMO.

You can learn a ton on this forum about working on these quads.

Hey thanks for the info guys. The kids and i will be off in a few weeks for Christmas break so i'll work on the carb myself. Should i by a manual or is the carb easy to work on? I'm always afraid to mess with the needle valves and the jets. Well thanks i'll let you know how she runs after i work on it.
