I've never done it, but from what I've seen / ben told, gearing is one of the biggest problems. (beside the fact of actually getting the engine in the frame) Also, all the 85 bikes are water cooled, therefore you have to find a place for the radiator where it won't get destroyed. Then you might have to get a custom pipe made to clear everything. (maybe not to) I've thought about doing this also for my youngest son. He has outgrown his 80cc quad in riding abilty, but not really in size. I really would like to build a new frame using balster or 300ex swing arm and front a-arms, but then use an yz85 engine, and baby raptor plastic. But I know by the time I could get it all together, he'll have out grown it. (dang kids just keep growing and growing...)
Why can't the factories build something like these? Fourlix proved that it would not be to hard to put decent suspension under the new baby raptor. Why can't Yahama do the same? I know that there are some better riding little quads out there, but from my exsperence, none are sprung right for the size of the kids that actually ride them. Put a kid on one that is about the correct weight, and the bars bang their knees! I mean, Honda, Yahama, Suzuki have all spent big bucks on their quads to improve all but the smallest quads. Don't they know, you have to start somewhere?
Sorry, just venting!

I started on a Blaster / yz80 swap, got it down to mounting the motor up and finding a better spot for the radiator, the guy I bought the frame from had a new yz80 motor in it, mounted the stock raditor on the nose, way to exposed, I found a 150cc scooter rad. that mounts sideways, so that will help some. Had to buy an old rebuilt 83 yz motor, the motor in the frame was totally grenaded, and the pipe was trashed, along with some other parts, but still had the gears he used, right now it is a rolling chassis, just have to get the motor mounted, the biggest problem with the older yz motor is the kick start mounts on a splined shaft, so it will need to be cut and rewelded to clear the frame, the newer motors have a bolt on kick start, you can put a spacer and a longer bolt to clear the frame. This one also came with a bracket to mount a street bike disc brake caliper, so it will stop REAL fast !! but after all my work, before I finished it, (part too much work and not enough knowledge) my son is now riding a 300ex, and I haven't put much time into it lately. I have also seen some nice 300ex / cr80 swaps, much better brakes and suspension on that setup. Well, if anyone wants a very near completed Blaster/yz80 project, let me know, figure out the motor mounts, radiator, and exhaust pipe set up, and it should be a decent little quad.

A few years back I put a CR-80 in a blaster.
It went in in about 5 hours.
The rear motor mount (swingarm area) needed to be ground down on the CR motor, then it slid right in. Just welded some tabs up to the front motor mount, all done there.
I mounted the CR radiator on the left of the gas tank.
The only thing that wasn't great and needed work, was the alignment of the sprockets.
This was before we went national racing. The local circiut still don't recognize a mod 90. I trashed the idea, especially after I saw what the national calibur mod 90's were built. ~~custom~~ 12k+
FYI: the reports on a 80cc in a 300ex are not good. I hear that the frame will vibrate apart. I have a 300ex and find it hard to believe, but that info comes from a sourse that would know best.
