Default Break in for Viper 50

Hi,
I have a Viper 50 for my son and a new Kodiak for myself...
We bought the Viper brand new .. but 6 months old...LOL
we bought it from a private person who bought it, never used it..

So...it never went through the "break in period" and check up before the warranty went out..
dang it..
Does everyone recommend taking it to the dealer to have it checked..??
Also I never got a "recomended service" guide or owners manual... anyone have any advice for service durring the first 20 hours...
it probably has about 20 hours on it now....
Just wondering what the dealer tells you when you purchase a new one, since we missed that speach...lol
thanks.

Also, has anyone had "excessive" breakage on the plastic...

he hasnt even wrecked it yet and the plastic fender split, and the plastic on the floorboard
is gone,he isnt rough with it at all. takes good care of it..

I cant belive the floorboard broke...?
now he can touch the front tire..I suppose I will have to bend a piece of metal and replace it..

I just cant believe that the plastic has broken that easily...?

Here's some "first time" riding checklist I found in my archives. If I remember correctly, I copied it from another mini-ATV Forum.

1. Check and adjust the tire pressure.
2. Check that the rear valve stems are facing outwards.
3. Pull the rubber hub nut caps and verify cotter keys are in. All wheels.
4. Pull air box cover and verify the air filter has been serviced and oiled.
5. Inspect cable routing.
6. Make sure R.P.M.'s don't increase as handle bars are turned.
7. Adjust front brake lever/cable to where it works for the rider.
8. Verify tether kill switch works.
9. Make sure it smokes, this tells you the oil injection system is functional.
10. Check fuel, and oil tank levels.
11. Ride it first yourself.
12. Apply all of these responses and common sense and your riding!
13. All Personal Protective Equipment should be worn before riding.
14. Go over all controls with Rider.
15. Check all nuts / bolts. Also worth applying "thread lock" on all suspension and other critical bolts / nuts. Some people use paint but I prefer to use "thread lock" paste.

I would purchase another spark plug and chain lube. Read the owners manual on chain adjustment this will be almost the first thing you have to do, mechanically.

Note: This is also a great checklist when pulling your any quad out of winter storage as well.

Hope this helps...

I'm NOT too sure how solid the plastic is on a Viper 50. I have a buddy who has a Viper 90 and he's very pleased with the plastic on his unit. I do know in cold weather, most plastic gets very brittle. If it's cold and you put too much pressure on it, it can snap - instead of flexing. Being in Michigan, the weather might be very cold / too cold in your area.

Hope this helps...

Thanks,
thats alot of info...

We check it for safety etc....but I am not mechanicaly inclined at all...lol...
I suppose I SHOULD take it to have it checked after the 20 hours, like they suggest on the "big" atv's...
I just wondered how many people really take the little ones in...I suppse they are no different than the big ones...ha ...just cheaper... but I still want it to last a long time....

I DO need to get a maint manual and owners manual, I will check out that site.....
Right now all I have is a title.....
but I did get a GREAT deal on it...
A guy bought it for his little girl, in OCT of 2003 she hated it...I bought it in November for 1000.00
vrs $1700.... good deal I thought...

Wouldn't hurt to have it checked over by a dealer. Most likely nothing much will be wrong with it but if there was something a trained eye may be able to catch some potential problems before they happen.I'm not sure what to say about your plastic problems. We've had no breakage with our 90 other than a back fender that had a bike land on top of it during a race.It just snapped the mounting tab off of it underneath and we had it repaired by a plastic welder for $20 bucks. Can't imagine how you would lose the floorboard.Did it actually break or did it just come loose and you lost it?

Hey

Nope it actualy broke.... the floorboard is one solid piece, and then has a bolt to the bottom of both front and back fenders,
the L in the floorboard where it goes up to meet the fender is Gone, snapped right off...

The tabs on the back fender also are broke(may have been that way)

He loves the Quad, It may be the Cold, but it was well over 30 when it happened...
I have to believe that someone out there make a "plastic fixin kit"...lol
Almost like one of those "fiberglass" repair kits with the epoxy and fiber tape...
Do you know of anything like that..??
I am sure I could take the body off and spend a good afternoon in the warm house
learning to "fix plastic"....

So the "20 hour" check up isnt as important on the little ones.?

I went out and bought a new kodiak 400 (2x4 since that was all the money I had after buying that E-ton...lol), but we have about 9 inches of snow, and it goes with NO problems...
See I had no quads.2 months ago.....now 2.... is this how it starts..??? hahaha just like pringels chips....

Thanks..
