Default my kids want lights!

Please read the threads original question, they are looking for a light kit/ or way to hook up lights to an existing atv.
They are not looking for a new atv.

Will it be OK if I ran one 35 watt light even though the stator is producing only 20 watts? I realize it won't be as bright, but anything is better than nothing. I figure the most it can pull is going to be 20 watts any way, so I am not at risk of burning the thing up, and since it will be on it's own circuit, I won't have to worry about killing the battery.
I wouldn't do that. Can you suck a golf ball through a straw?

The 20w lamp will draw 1.66 amps
The 35w lamp will draw 2.91 amps

This will cause your coil to burn up. If what you meant by split design was 2 seperate coils, then you could probably parrallel the coils and run it off the same 12v power that's there now. If you did that, I'd fuse whatever is existing there seperately.

It sounded like you were saying it was 2 seperate windings on same coil. I don't see how this would be accomplished unless they center tapped the coil, and if they did this I don't see how that would work unless the rotation of the windings were reversed at the point where they were center tapped.

anyways point is you would damage, and if they are both on same coil you'd screw up the whole system by melting the coil.
