LT 80 starting and dying prob
#1
Glad someone referred me to here! There is a bunch of little quad info on here!
Now, on to the problem.
What happens is, we cant start the quad without the choke on no matter what. Even if it was just shutdown, we still have to choke it.
Then once we DO get it running, it will idle/run for awhile then die all of a sudden.
Here is what we have done so far...
Took the carb out and pulled both jets out and blasted all kinds of carb cleaner through the ports and compressed air afterward, and made sure both jets were clean. We blasted the carb cleaner from all different directions into various ports also.
We dont have the ohm specs for the coil or magneto, but we swapped out the coil from an LT80 that is working fine (didnt help.)
We checked the float level using the clear tube method, and the level is approximately 1/8" below where the bowl attaches to the carb. (dont know where it is supposed to be!)
Any ideas anyone? I am about ready to push the sucker off the highest peak I can find. We bought it used for 1000 bucks, and was supposed to have been completely rebuilt, now its running like crap if it even starts!
Thanks in advance everyone!

It sure does sound like a carb problem, or at least a fuel problem. Try your buddy's carb on it. If same problem persists, I'd look into a petcock problem.
Did you remove the brass piece that the float needle sits in when you cleaned the carb?

Yeah we were thinking fuel problem also, but when we crank it without choking it, then pull the plug, it is wet, so we are thinking it is getting fuel.
Now whats this about the petcock? We didnt even think to look at that. Yeah we should have pulled the other carb while we were pulling the coil... duh us!
thanks for the reply!

OK, do the above to insure that it's not running out of gas.
Next thing I would do is pull the flywheel off and sand it. Sometimes it gets so rusty/dirty in there it effects the spark.

After I put a FMF pipe, boyseen reeds and changed the air filter our LT did about the same thing. It would not start unless the choke was on, did not like to run unless the choke was on. After I cleaned the carb till I was blue in the face I decided it had to be not getting enough fuel. I checked the petcock, and it would flow a full stream. I went from the stock 92.5 (I think) main jet to an 97.5 and wha-la problem solved. Now I know it could have been something in the carb, but it really helped the way this thing runs. Just an idea.
We love our LT when its running right, and more than once I've had to stop myself from torching it, when its not!!! (like right now it does not like water!!! It cuts out even from just washing it)
Good luck, and remember to just count to 10 and take a deep breath!!!! Yea right!!!!
