chain tension on a polaris sportsmen 90
On our Pred-90 in strock form, I used to tighten its chain by following the instructions within its manual. If you don't have a manual for your SP-90, here's its summary on how it works on a '03 Pred-90:
- Lossen the 4 big bolts at the rear of the swing arm. If I remember correctly, they are a 14 mm socket.
- Lossen the one side of the manual adjustment mechanism as well.
- Using a 10 mm wrench, ticken the little tightener located under the rear / right side of the axle. Tighten until the appropriate amount of slack is taken out of the chain. If you tighten it all the way and you can't get your chain to its proper tightness, you may have to remove a link from the chain.
* Don't tighten the chain until its too firm. It needs 1/4" slack in its "sweet spot". For best results, use a tie strap from your trailer and compress its rear suspension approx 1/2 to 3/4 down. In this compression state, tighten its chain until approx 1/4" slack. After tightening up its 4 main bolts, bounce up/down on the rear to ensure the chain isn't too tight during its entire compression movement.
If you get tired of tightening its chain, I'd recommend you install a Spring Loaded Chain Tensioner. We installed a Spring Loaded Chain tensioner and haven't needed to tighten its chain since then. For more details,

Note: After you tighten its chain, ensure you adjust its rear brake adjustment as well.
Hope this helps...
