Baja 90cc

Hi blitzpit,
Sorry to hear you had a problem with your ATV overheating, I agree they do run hot but that is what we should expect for an air cooled engine. You might want to consider changing the air filter, the stock box and foam filter isn't worth a damn. If you read thru this post you will find info on K&N filters that many of us have gone to which definitely improves their breathing. Also, put good oil in them - we use synthetic. In one of your first posts you referred to your Baja 90 as a "tank", what changed? If there is anything we (the forum) can help with please let us know.

Hello everybody. I did some research - mostly on this thread - before deciding to buy the Baja 90 for my son. He's 12 and has outgrown his Eton 50. Anyway, not having any luck starting the baja. Got it started the day I brought it home. But never again. I run the battery down trying, put it on the trickle charger, run it down again. I read earlier in the thread that there's a choke?! ...doesn't say anything in the owner's manual. The battery is pretty weak now - cranks pretty slow even after a couple days on the charger. So I pulled it out for a new one. Damnest thing - I can't find a replacement anywhere! It's a Koyo CB7L-B. Very odd dimensions: 4 3/8 H, 2 1/2 W, 5 1/4 L.
Can anyone help with choke location and new battery part number? I'm ot very familiar with these ATVs. Does it show? Any help would be much appreciated. In the meantime, I thinking I should have spent the extra bucks on an Eton 90! The 50 ran flawlessly for 3 years.
Thanks in advance!

The choke is a black plastic lever on the left side (when sitting on the machine) of the carb, up is on, down is off.
My 10 yr old enjoys my sons eton 50 more then her baja 90, it has more power, she can climb hills w/o getting stuck, I fell the baja is a cheap quality machine. Ive had to charge the batter many times, and it is very hard to start and keep running in the cold weather.
I want to sell her baja and buy another 90 for her, I found an eton 90 for $800.00, if I can get rid of her's and its still around Ill prob buy it.

I'm selling my Baja 90. I've just started rebuilding my Jeep CJ7 from the frame up, so....have too many hobbies, not enough room, and need cash. If anyone is interested, I'm in Welland, Ontario (close to Niagara Falls). I'm asking $1,200 CAN. It's like new; probably doesn't have more than 20 hours on it. It runs fine, never had any problems with it, no damage at all.

Thanks Danvan, I found the choke. Hopefully I'll finally be able to get her started once the battery is charged. I have another question for anyone and everyone. I thought I'd change the oil even though my son only rode the thing once for about an hour. I pull the oil plug, open the filler cap and nothing...not a drop. Can you believe those yahoos at Pep Boys. I'm lucky she didn't seize on me.
Equally interesting...when I pulled the plug, out came a spring and a long metal sleeve with holes in it - presumably for oil flow? Now I didn't notice anyone on the previous 18 pages mentioning that. Is that normal? Did I pull the correct plug. Sorry to sound like such a newbie greenhorn...but I am what I am.
Last question...I presume this thing has tranny fluid or oil. It's a semi-automatic - if that matters. The owner's manual says nothing about this. There's a big old nut under the engine a few inches away from the oil plug. Is that to drain the tranny fluid? And if so, what goes back in there?
Any and all help is very much appreciated!

Hi m1chael57,
Welcome to the forum!
You pulled the wrong bolt to drain the oil. No oil will come out of that hole, trust me, I did the same thing. There is another bolt not too far from the one you pulled that will let the oil out. I can't remember which way you move from that bolt and I can't check 'cause I'm out of town. I'm pretty sure it's the other bolt head you refer to in your post. Most of us have replaced the oil, not tranny fluid, with synthetic oil, previous posts will clarify what grade to put in but it will be dependent on temperature you will be riding in. It is a good idea to change the oil as soon as possible because I understand the oil that is put in it when built is not good oil and possibly has an additive to aid the break-in.
Good luck,

I just went out and looked at mine, the drain plug I believe is the biggest bolt under there, mine has a 'D' on it.
I dont know for sure, but Ive been told that the engine and tranny use the same oil on many quads. I know my honda has no tranny oil, but my eton does, not realy sure about the baja but Ive only changed the engine oil on the baja. It is a good idea to do it soon, at least as far as what Ive read here. I used semi synthetic oil in all my quads.
My Baja has a sight glass on the right side i think, for checking oil level, ck it before draining, it should be up to the top of the glass.
Good luck, let us know if we can help, even thought Im no pro on these things, still learning my self.

Dogbert:
We purchased a Baja 90 from CT, 2 months ago, the kids are having lots of fun, but the thing is slowing falling apart, first the mudflaps, then the plastic wheel guards (I think that is what it is called), and a few other things, so far we were able to fix these ourselves, but would like to know where would you get replacement parts for the quad?
Thanks

Thanks Dogbert and Danvan. I called Baja service who admitted that some 90s went out with misprinted owner's manuals. The oil drain plug and filler are on the opposite side of where the owner's manual directs me to go. So Dog, you were right.
So the oil is changed, the battery is charged, and thanks to Danvan - I now know I have a choke. And wouldn't ya know it - she fired right up. Thanks guys.
I'm still curious to know what it is that I originally pulled out. Baja service assures me that it's supposed to be dry. They also said they'd send be a service manual - free!
So I'm a happy man with a happy 12 year old. The Baja's working great - at least for now. Thanks everyone.
