Default Baja 90cc

2manytoys - yes - I actually bought the Baja at the Pep Boys in Lancaster as the one here in York was out of stock... it's about 35 miles away...

Dogbert - I did doublecheck the lanyard - it was (and has been) firmly in place... I removed and reinserted but still no joy... it cranks like it is going to start, but it never does (almost like it just is not getting fuel)... what is frustrating is that is was running great over the holidays...

Since I am no mechanic...Here is what I may try next...

1.) replace sparkplug (this is simple enough)
2.) replace battery (even though I seem to have a full good charge, I bought a new battery for $19 from Walmart)

If neither of those things work, I may be forced to check the fuel supply by draining the carb).

Any other suggestions?
If it is something more serious/complex, I may need to bring it in for service (the closest Baja service center is Assembly Plus, which is located about 4 miles away)...

Hi jfullam,

Well that eliminates one possibility. When you pull the plug and attach to the spark plug wire to check for spark, is the plug grounded against the engine when you push the start button? I had a problem with one of ours not wanting to start up a week or so ago and after much farting about checked the gas line and found it to be frozen/plugged. Got gas flowing and it has been fine since. I would check the spark plug again and if you get a spark then that eliminates another problem and you can start looking at gas line/carb issues. If no spark them there is an electrical problem. I am no mechanic either, just relying on what I learned as a kid with my old dirt bikes. Know enough to be dangerous, that's all (hopefully not too dangerous either). Hopefully 2manytoys can help you out as I believe he is more mechanically inclined.

Good luck,

jfullam,

Dont bring it in for service. I may be able to help since we live close to each other we can set up a time to get together. I have messed with a few Bajas in the last few months and have been able to get them running. Let me know what you want to do.

You can use any non detergent oil for wet clutch systems. Motorcycle oils are for wet clutch.

I am having the exact problem as jfullum, also bought the baja 90, mine from the pepboys in Exton Pa, after buying a trickler battery (1amp) the bike has been starting fine. My daughter was riding it most of the afternnon yesterday (Saturday) and when I went to start it today it appears the battery is fully charged, sounds like its going to start, but doesn't kick on. Checked fuel line position and basically everything jfullum has done but for some mysterious reason it won't start. I'll be watching closely to see if anyone is able to help jfullum and myself. Thanks.

Hi jef,

I put the same oil as you stated in your post (Amsoil 100% synthetic 10W-30 Turbo Formulated Motor Oil, Product Code ATM-QT) in both of our Baja 90s and they have been operating fine/better than when they had the stock oil/shipped oil in them. The back of the container states "Meets or exceeds the engine protection requirements of all domestic and foreign gasoline and diesel engines specifiying the following: SAE 10W-30 API Service SL, SJ CF" and a whole bunch of other specs, none of which beyond the SAE 10W-30 are referred to in the ATV Owners Manual. Hope this helps.

OK - so I futzed with it a bit more, still no joy... I verified that the spark plug seems good, the battery seems good, and I checked the fuel line going from the tank to the carb and fuel is flowing nicely thru this fuel line....maybe some blockage problem in the carburetor?
Either that, or the engine switch is maybe failing and does not think it is really in the ON position when it is....

As I kept cranking it today, there were times where it seemed to almost begin to start... but it just could not sustain anything...

2manytoys - I may take you up on your offer... I know nothing about carburetors... I am out of town all this week, maybe we can arrange something next weekend... I may check with one of my neighbors first as he is pretty mechanical, so I will let you know where I get with that...

If anyone has any other suggestions of anything to troubleshoot, I would be grateful... Thanks All.
