Baja 90cc

P.S.,.....Just got back from my local Pepboys store and they just got in the new 5-speed Baja 150cc atv.....all I can say is WOW what a sweet looking bike...its really jack up with some heavy duty suspenion......looks like a Suzuki engine with a clutch....never seen that before....its race ready....of course its a china bike with National stamp on the engine ?!?! For only $ 1,999 here in the U.S. looks like a well built machine.....man it looks nothing like the other Baja's.....a very sporty race looking type bike.......just not real sure about the clutch but I bet that baby will pop some wheelies......this bike is a jumper as my kid would say.....lol.

Ya i bought one of these baja 90cc atv's there pretty good but ya the bottom end lacks power is there anything you could do to improve the bottom end also are there any after market mufflers that will fit it.
I unpluged the speed limiter in the rear it goes pretty good at top end well good enough for my 8 year old.

I bought one of them Baja 50 dirt bikes for my boys this summer. Its been a good little beginner bike so far. Only thing I don't like is the mickey mouse air box set up. It draws the air in from in front of the back tire. In muddy weather they can plug it up with mud in no time!! So I keep an eye on it and keep the oil clean. I'm gonna see if I can't modify it some how etc.
With good luck with the bike we then looked at quite a few quads at different shops. I Checked out the baja quad at first but I felt the tires were too small and it had no gears.
So I looked at the Panterra 90 quad it has the 3 speed trans with reverse which is nice. It came with chain drive and the rear disc brakes, actually the handle bar controls are the same as the Baja 90. I didn't like where they mounted the battery or the mickey mouse air box. This quad sold for about $1500 out west here. I also checked out the MFC 90cc quad ($2300) it looked alot like the Baja but had shaft drive and 3 speeds but no reverse. Then I looked at the Ducar 110cc quad they also make a 90cc. This quad was alot like the MFC 90 & Baja but has reverse like the Panterra. The Ducar 110cc quad is common as many companies sell it over here under different brand names like AFL etc.
Well I bought the Ducar quad ($2300) as its 110cc with shaft drive and reverse. After I got it the first hr. the rear diff. went out! The quad had a real noisy driveline though right from the get go. So they gave me another one and we've been driving it the past month fine. The ducar has good rubber on it, nice big tires. But the suspension is not very good, real stiff!! You could put a 400lb rider on it and I'm sure you wouldn't bottom it out! Also I really had to go over it as the place selling them does a poor PDI if any on them. They rear axel and diff. look just like the little Yamaha 90's.
After the ducar quad and the number of boys we have I picked up the Baja 90 on sale at CT. The first one had a fuel tank leak though! Anyway I got another and its been running fine other than the Carb bolts loosing off one day!! I guess they didn't check that and I forgot to also. The rest of the quad though looks like they went over it pretty good checking bolts etc.
This quad has really good supsension for the kids unlike the Ducar. Also the fit and finish is a little better also I'd say. The rear hubs fit nice and tight on the rear axel where as the Ducar's are a sloppy fit. It's a little tricky for small hands to start till they get the hank of it with the brake saftey switch etc. It doesn't go very fast ok for beginners I know but when we all go out across the open field the BAJA is scream'n at the back. I may check into that rev. limiter they stuck on there. I know another family with one and they said thier's does 40KMS. Ours only does 30kms then the rev. limiter kicks in. Tonight the boys said it did 50 then a 150 etc. So it sounds like the speedo is not working right anymore! I may have to clock it with a vehicle or something.
The boys like them both as they really like that reverse option when they get into tight spots and the big tires. The Ducar is faster and has more power with having gears. It can haul me around and a boy with no problem. The Ducar is nice also in that you can leave it in 1st gear for young riders to drive around on.
Personally I think the best value is the Baja by far and for a beginner quad its hard to beat. But I think if they combined the Ducar's big tires, 3 speed & reverse trans (4 speed would be ideal) with the BAJA's suspension it would be perfect. The baja 50 bike and 90 quad along with the Ducar 110 motors all look to have come from the same factory in China. Also the parts seem to be dirt cheap compared to Honda etc. The baja 50 bike will take engine parts from a honda xr 70 I'm told. As guys on another form have done it. One thing I did with all of these "toys' is after I got them home I ran them till they were hot and changed the oil. I stuck in 20w-50 for the summer and I guess we'll put in 10w-30 for the winter. Who knows what kind of oil they are shipped with from China.
My local CT says they've sold 30 of them last time I talked to them and had 12 people on a waiting list. They also do the warranty service on them in the auto service center now they tell me. Buying a quad from CT is going to be like buying a lawn mower or something. If you are not mechanically inclined somewhat you may get frusterated if something goes wrong. As you probably won't get the service like would if you bought a lawn mower at John Deere or a quad at Honda etc.
If Canadian Tire can stock a few parts and can get parts from Baja in Arizona they will grab a huge market share. The mainline dealers can't compete as they sell thier 90's for $3000. Heck I think they want like $2000 for a little 50cc quad with pull start!
These 250's and 300's sound intersting if CT can sell them for under $4000 & supply parts they will sell a lot of them.

Very nice review Sawyer.....Don't see a speed limit plug on the back of mind.......where exactly is it located ?.........yeah the Baja's here are at least $ 400 to $ 1,000 less than name brand bikes....and they certainly have found a nice place in the market.....I only wish mine was a 3 or 4 speed shifter.......because the low end is lacking a bit....but most 90cc auto's seem to......man Pepboy's Prices are killing the competition....and their inventory is huge.......their best prices of the year come the day after Thanksgiving when they do a big sale.....I'll be drooling over the 300cc when it comes in.....new pics should be up on their web site by this Sunday.

If you look on the opposite side of the muffler there should be a black box with a plug going into it its called the speed limiter in my manual i unpluged it for my self and i noticed alot better top speed doesnt change the bottom end.

Bozzy the limiter is under the left rear fender mounted out in the open there. I tried it this morning as the boys were up and ready to go again at 7:30 am! It made some differance I noticed. I plugged it back in for the kids though.
I have 3 boys and when their friends come over the quads and bike are running nonstop!! So these things are getting a good testing out in a hurry. Seems like I'm always filling them with gas!! They started back in school this week so their quading time will be cut back drastically.
This Baja quad definately had some thought put into it unlike some other China quads I've seen. I hope our Canadian Tire up here actually does get these bigger quads in. If they are built as well as the little Baja they should be good. Ducar makes a 250 sport/utility quad which again many other companies sell to under different names. I wasn't impressed with it though. It had a manual clutch, chain drive and an add on reverse on the rear axel. It also has a 2 cylinder motor, so 2 carbs, 4 valves etc. Personally the simpler they're built the better the way I look at it.

O.k.,......I think I see the limit switch.....my parts book calls it the C.D.I.,......Its attach to the rear handle bar frame on the left near the brake light and behind the pull stop switch.....gotta unplug that..... too bad it does not give you more low end juice..........thanks !

Found my switch....WOW what a difference....up and down my road at full speed, had the kids wondering how i did it.....had to warn them not to play with it.......I am very impressed by this baja machine....been giving it a good work out....hopefully once the kids are back in school next week.....I can get a break....

Dragoon how fast does your Baja 90 go with the speed limiter plugged in and how fast unplugged?? When I unplugged it didn't seem to make much differance on mine. Maybe my trans is not working up to par or something.

I haven't clocked it cause my 90 didn't come with a speedo, but with it unplugged it doesn't want to start to choke out at full throttle, when I get a chance I will try and clock it against my machine. With it plugged in it will do about 45 or 50 Kph, that is with my oldest son and he is about 105 lbs, I will let you know. Just as question, did anyones Baja come with one of the LCD speedo's.....mine had nothing and now I see them at CanTire with them
