Default PLEASE HELP

Last week I bought my son a brand new Redcat 70cc from a friend of mine who is a dealer. He delivered it and got it started and taught my son to ride it. It only ran for about 30 minutes that first night and he said that was normal for new quads. It only ran for about 10 minutes the second night and then we never could get it started again. We took it back to my friend, he charged the battery and it started right up, but he didn't have time to make sure it would run. We got it home and couldn't get it started again for 2 days. Then we got it started but couldn't run it, it just kept dying. So we made an appointment to take it all the way back out to my friend, but he never showed up. So we brought it home and tried it again. Not only did it start but it actually ran for over an hour. But tonight when we tried it we managed to get it started but it just wouldn't run. My older son drained some gas out of the tank and noticed that there were what looked like dirt particles in it and he thinks there is something seriously wrong. But I don't know how there could already be something wrong with it. That's why I bought brand new, because I am no mechanic. I can make sure the gas is turned on, I know how to work the choke and I know to make sure the tether is plugged in. I am very frustrated, and if I had bought it from someone other than a friend I would demand it be fixed or my money back. I know that I shouldn't have bought it since I don't know how to work on it, but my daughters and I all have horses and my sons don't like to ride horses, so I was trying to be fair. Is this normal for new quads to act this way? I really don't have anyone I can ask for advice. So any would be appreciated. Thanks. Jessica

That's definetely not normal. I have no experience with these particular quads, but that's not normal for anything. It would be normal for it to stall. I've seen that quite a bit before they're broken in. But they ALWAYS start back up immediately. I'd check the dipstick for any metal filings too. Do you have a lemon law in your state? I've heard that the taiwanese/chinese quads breakdown alot and are completely unreliable. Your friend shouldn't take offense to this situation. Just think of if the shoe was on the other foot. Wouldn't you be doing all you could to make it right? Wouldn't you be the one going out of your way to rectify the situation? Doesn't sound like this friend is much of a friend. Demand that he/she fixes this thing or get's you a new one, and tell him/her to put the shoe on the other foot as you did (by now) and consider how they would feel if they were the customer of this friend who is trying to $crew them over.

Hi Jessica,

I would have your friend fix it or have him get you a new one. But in the meantime here are a couple things you can do that are real easy. 1 - Change the spark plug, the ones from China are usually junk & it's definately fouled. You should have gotten a tool kit with the bike, so you have the tools. 2 - Look at the tip of the plug(the part that goes into the machine), If it's real black & is wet there is too much fuel & not enough air. If it's white in color your getting too much air. There are or should be two screws on the carb(the very top of the motor), one controls the air mixture & one controls the fuel/idle. It should show you in the manual(hopefully you got the manual) where they are exactly. Just adjust the air mixture screw quarter turn at a time & each time try to start the machine. Once the machine starts, adjust the idle screw(bottom one) until the machine runs with an even Hummmmmmmmm. 3 - Are you running the machine with the choke on? Don't, the choke is just for starting the machine. Last but not least, sometimes the pull cord shut-off thingee in the back pops loose causing an intermittant spark. Push on it to make sure it's all the way in & try to start the machine.

Good luck & take care.

I haven't replied in quite awhile but your question peaked my intrest. Why is the battery having to be charged? Is it from trying to start it after it dies? After the battery has a full charge does it run well and start better? I am thinking you might have a prob in the charging system. That is if your battery is dead from running and not from trying to start it. If your buddy sells these you should just have him take care of it, rather than trying to work on it yourself and possibly voiding the warrenty. If not can you give us more symptoms on how it runs when it runs?

Thanks for the reply. I noticed that you live in Grand Mound. I live in Onalaska. The reason the battery dies is because we try so hard to get it started. Nothing is ever consistent with this thing. Most of the time if we get it started it runs bad. Hardly any power at all and then after a few minutes it just dies, and won't start up again. But one night last week we were able to get it started and it ran great for about an hour. But the next day we were back to running bad again. We don't mess with it because I am paranoid about screwing something up and then he won't fix it for sure. So all we do is try to start it. I feel bad for my little guy because he really wants to get on it and go, and at 3 he doesn't really understand why he can't. Someone said something about a manual, and tools that I should have got with it. I didn't get anything. They said they would send me the title and I saw him write up a reciept for it, but I haven't seen them either. I asked him about it the next day when we went to his shop to buy a helmet, and he said the receipt was at his house. Am I being ripped off or is it normal to not get anything at all with it. Thanks to the advice I have gotten I am more confident about taking it back and making it clear that I want him to fix it. I just hope I don't lose a friend, and I hope I don't get ripped of for the $1200, I paid for it. Thanks for taking the time to talk to me. Jessica

Actually he is working on it now. After getting such good advice I was able to make it clear to him what the problem is. He said he had got one other like it where the manufacturer didn't clean out the carb so that is what he is doing with it. Hopefully after that it will run great. And his wife assured me that he just forgot to give me all the stuff and she will make sure I get the manual etc. I grew up here in Ony and Mossyrock, but lived out on 183rd for a few years. Right at the end close to Applegate. Thanks for great advice. Jessica

I don't want to tell you where his shop is because I don't want to feel like I'm talking bad about a friend. We are still trying to get this thing going and I don't want to make him mad right now either. When we took it to him this last time he said he had it running for 20 minutes, and it just had problems with the battery. So he unhooked the alarm system and gave us a charger. But when we tried to run it it only ran for about 5 minutes. I don't understand why it runs for him, but as soon as we get it home it won't run for us. I'm also a little concerned because my dad told me that to get the title for it I should have signed something and been given a copy of it so I could prove I own it if I wanted to get tabs for it to ride on public land. I'm really afraid that I just screwed up and wasted $1200. And I'm not sure what to do now. I hope you understand why I won't tell you who it is. I already opened my mouth to the shop there in Rochester, and he guessed who I bought it from so I am worried that he will call them and say something and then I'll be really screwed. Because I don't even have a receipt for it.
