04 lt 80 need to modify, what are the secrets again?
#1
Hi my friend Ed (quadduck) let me post this question on here as we both suck at trying to research the forums and was hoping for someone to list all the mods that can be done. He told me some of them but I would rather hear it from you folks as we may be friends but we argue and don't get along when it comes to working and modifying quads. Mainly I want to know the basics for clutch and motor. What do I do to the head? He told me I could run it with out a gasket and It would raise compression or shave it 30thousands. This doesn't sound right to me so he said to ask for myself and some guy on here named jack who knows everything. Plus I am not reall crazy about what he said to do to the clutch he told me to cut the rear shoes and take out 2 rollers in the front or wiegh 4 and drill out 6? He also said to run a 428 chain and sprocket from an older model and a carb brass restrictor? And what do I cut on the shoes? Thanks for any help. David

David, all I can say is if you dont listen to him then it's your loss. I have done a few of these and they perform great. And Jack (LT80) is the man on these for sure.
WHY WOULD YOU THINK HE WOULD LIE TO YOU???????????????

Gidday David,
Yes you can run w/no head gasket on a stock machine. Shaving the head .030 and using a gasket is a better option IMO.
Indeed remove 2 rollers from the front clutch. 6 drilled to 3/8 weighs the same as 4 stock, so just stick w/4.
The 428 sprockets are a good option. I use #40 chain from the tractor supply,go-kart shop, or MSC (mscdirect.com)..The #40 chain rolls 10x easyer and is 20x cheaper. There is 1/2 links available also (big plus).
To cut the shoes, cut the part off behind the contact pad, then drill holes in the underside to the exact weight. You will need a gram scale (I use triple beams). 180 grams +/- is where you want to be for a stock motor. AGAIN,,Each shoe needs to weigh exactly as the others!
The brass restrictor:: This is usually removed before anyone sees the machine, you just make sure it's not between the carb top and the slide (it restricts the carb slide movement).
These are the "beginner" mods.
Ed's been studying the LT80 in here for quite some time and has learned loads!!! There is a 99.9% chance his opinions are correct.
BTW...I don't know everything, but thanks for the compliment.

Where do you find the 428 sprockets? Are they from another model or an aftermarket source? Also, I haven't had any luck finding the 90 main jet. Does someone have the part # or know where to find it. Thanks.

Rebel Gear or Sprocket specialists. Your local bike shop should be able to get them.
12/26 (428) is the same as 10/22 (520). I recommend a Suzuki rear sprocket. It's steel and about 20 bucks.
