Default Kazuma Cougar 250/325cc

Does anyone know much about the Kazuma Cougar 250cc or the 325cc. Extreme Motor Sales has them for a decent price. I will be doing some trail riding on the farm and hunting some with it. I can't decide which one to get. Of course the 325 is more expensive. I can also purchase from a company named Lightning ATV or Alternative Transportation for a lower price. Any info on the 250 or 325 would be appreciated. Also any info on the dealers I listed. Thanks

We purchased our Cougar from Alternative Transportation. I could not possibly say enough about their service. They have gone above and beyond to assist us novices. They have been there to assist and/or replace to resolve any and every issue. Not that there has been many.

We had an issue with it not starting. Cleaned the carb, didn't help. They overnighted us a replacement carb. But it turned out to be a valve adjustment. They walked through every step.

Thumbs up to Alternative Transportation!

I picked up a photo sales magazine called Boats Bikes and RV Shopper. There are many adds by new name brand dealers. A sampling of new name brand similarly sized bikes yields: Honda Recon 250 @ $2999 (2 ads), Artic Cat 250 @ $3399 and Suzuki Ozark 250 @ $3099 and I believe I saw a Yamaha Bruin 250 for $2999 somewhere else. Used are much cheaper than these.

This is little if any more than chinese bikes of this size by some dealers. Many chinese dealers want around 3000 for their bikes and the cheapest I've seen the Kazuma 250 for is 1999.

I have a sunl 70 and a kazuma 110 for the kids. They're ok for my daughters but they were much cheaper relative to name brand bikes. That's not necessarily so with adult sized bikes.

I've considered the gator 250 myself. However, the above and unknown reliability keep me from buying one.

Just something to consider.

First of all, thanks go out for the kudos from the poster above - it's a real challenge to help people diagnose and fix problems over the phone, but we do try our best to support our customers.

I also wanted to add on to the post above regarding the lower-priced Japanese models. First, I would question whether or not the advertised prices include assembly, prep, freight/delivery, and the many other fees that most Japanese dealers tack on to the "sale" price. You can usually add about $500-1000 to the sticker price, whereas the price for the Cougar at our store is $2200 and that includes delivery to your door with minimal setup and prep required. Having said that, you could pay twice as much or more for a Japanese ATV versus the Cougar. Are the Japanese brands worth twice as much or more? We don't think so...

Also, take a look at the huge disparity in the price of replacement parts. The engine on the Kazuma Cougar 250 is the same engine design used on the Honda Helix scooter, and I would estimate that the average part for the Honda engine costs about 4-5 times more than the same Kazuma part. It's ridiculous how much they charge for parts, and it's an especially big concern if you're considering buying a used Japanese bike.

Anyway, these are a few of the points we make to our potential customers. It's up to you to decide if you are willing to pay so much more for an established brand.

Some more things to consider...
