I need headlights on a sportsman 90
I put some 55watt driving lights on my sons 90 a while back and had to have the stator replaced ( expensive lesson learned ) but we need lights on this thing so has anyone found a good safe way to put lights on one of these quads or is it time to trade it off? Thanks William

Unfortunately, the Polaris 90 brand has a factory stator output of 32-38 watts. If installing lights, one needs to stay before the 32 watts limit, or one's battery will eventually drain.
For lights, one can install 2 x 15 watt lights or install 1x10W light and a 1x20W light. 2x10W lights are great DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) but aren't bright enough for dark time riding. Personally, I feel anyone under 16 should NOT be driving at night. Other then crawling back to their trailer when getting caught at sunset in a dark bush.
As a suggestion, replace the factory sealed tail light assembly with a different assembly. While doing this, enable a running light a brake light in its new rear assembly. the end result is a combo tail light. Replace its conventional #1157 bulb with a LED #1157 bulb. LED bulbs use much less watts. Thus, allowing more watt consumption for the front light(s).
Install 2 x MR11 bulbs in the front. Downgrade one of its factory 20 watt bulb to 10 watts. Leave the other bulb as 20 watts. This will put the factory stator system right at the border. If it drains the battery too much, downgrade both bulbs to 10 watts. 2x10s are great DRLs but are very poor brightness for dark riding.

Generally speaking its not a good idea to have youth riding in conditions where lights are needed.
It is commonly accepted that youth develope judgement and decision making skills as they grown into young adults.
For this same reason we restrict youth drivers licenses, boat operations, motorcycle permits etc. to daytime operations.
There are already enough challenges for youthfull riders without throwing restricted visability, reduced depth perception and loss of speed recognition at them.
This is the primary reason most youth ATV's do not come factory equiped with lights.

I agree my boys shouldn't and won't be riding after dark. However we enjoy a lot of trail riding in the summer and at times the trails can get very dusty, which is why it is recommended to ride with your low beam headlights on!!! So you can be seen! Why do you think all cars today have drl's???? Because they found it to greatly reduce accidents!!! That is why I ordered the light kit from the '06 predator 90's and I will install it on my boy's '05!!! Everything I can do as a parent to keep my kid safe and protect this sport that we all love I will do!

JDMAN60,
here is another link about adding lights to a Sportsman 90
one of the things I've found out with my install is that the 35w bulb is still puts too much drain on the battery.
After riding all day with the head light on it was too much and drained the battery to much to start the ATV back up.
I'm gonna be replacing the existing break light bulb with some bright white LED's in the break light lense
and give it another try with the 35w bulb. If it still is to much of a drain on the battery I'm more than likely
going to be replacing the 35w bulb with either a 25w or 30w bulb and give it another try.

I feel anyone under 16 should NOT be driving at night. Other then crawling back to their trailer when getting caught at sunset in a dark bush. Which has happened to us twice.
I do believe in DRLs. Especially in the dark bush where we ride. If wondering, the ATV club in my area tells everyone to drive with the "Low beam lights on". Or, use the factory DRLs. It does improve safety levels during daytime driving trail conditions

Well, I do beleive me kid SHOULD be able to ride after dusk. We sometimes go on night rides as a big group through the mud hills and are typically only in 1st/2nd gear, 2 or 3 adults leading and 2 or 3 adult closing. They will NEVER go toying around by themselves after dark
I also know of a few kids that are under 16 years of age that are way better riders than probably most adults. Parents should be the judge, responsible for them.
The lights mini quads should be mandatory, granted kids can normally be seen on a quad with peripheal vision but the extra glimpse of a light out of the corner of your eye might just save them, kinda like that 8 ft flag. That spit second might just help.
