Okay knowledgeable people...

My son's SunL 70 took a beating over the weekend what adults and teens riding it over some pretty bumpy terrain. The thing held up well with only 2 issues. The first was the nuts vibrating off of the exhuast. That was an easy fix. The second, is the chain. The chain stretched quite a bit. I kept tightening it and kept tightening it. Through the chain twice. I've got it tightened down about as tight as it'll go at the moment. If it stretches anymore I don't believe I have any more room to tighten it. What says you guys? Can I take a link out of this chain? Can I buy a new chain from somewhere? Should I buy an upgraded chain? Please help. Thanks.

 

You could take a link out. I would check for chain wear first though. You can do that by grabbing the chain in the middle where it goes over the rear sprocket and pulling it away from the teeth. If more than 1/2 of the teeth are exposed on the sprocket, the chain is worn out. I suggest you replace the chain with something of a higher quality before the sprockets wear out too.

Thanks for the quick reply and welcome. I'm not sure I understand though. Pulling the chain away from the sprocket would indicate the chain is loose, but I don't see how it tells me if the chain is wore out. I'm sorry. I'm not real mechanically inclined but I'm learning. Do you have any suggestions of where to buy a higher quality chain for this model?

I may not be explaining it right, let me try again. When mounted on the quad, the chain wraps around the sprockets. Imagine having the same size chain as the sprocket. So you had a link for every tooth on the sprocket. And lets say that you could put a master link on it too. In that state, if you could pull the chain away from the sprockets and expose the teeth of the sprocket, You would have a worn chain. Chains that need adjustment get looser between the sprockets. When this happens it will rub on the frame or swing arm. A new chain could be loose enough to drag on the frame/swingarm but you wont be able to pull it off the sprocket and expose teeth. I hope that helps but if not Ill try and find a pic of what I mean.

 

I think I get it now. Chain goes from front sprocket to th rear sprocket. I would agree between the two is where the chain slap is. Now, on the rear sprocket the chain wraps over the back half like a half circle ). You are saying grab the chain in the middle of the half circle and pull up, if the chain is bad, it will "stretch" up off the sprocket even though its on the sprocket at the top and the bottom and I can gage if the chain is bad.

I'll do this tonight and see what happens. Do these cheap quad chains have a master? If the chain is not wore out can I pull the master and then pull a link from it? Guess I'll just have to tear into it and look. Anyone know chain size or type for ordering a new one?

In the middle of the 1/2 circle pull back, and see how much of the teeth are exposed.

I would buy a o-ring style of chain but any good RK or DID chain will work also. There should be a masterlink amd all of the chinese quads I have looked at are size 428.

 

Checked the chain out last night. Chain looks to be in good shape. Just seems it keeps stretching. I've got the axle all the way back now to have the chain tight. If it stretches out again, I'll attempt to remove a link. Currently I have the whole thing torn apart nut and bolting it. Realized many things were vibrating loose on me. Took the body of and now I'm checking over things.

 

Well...finished the nut and bolt job. Changed the oil and took her out last night. Through the stupid chain again. I've got it tightened down as far as I can. Now I need to see if I can take a link out of it. I lost the clip that holds the Master Link on though. I'm guessing when I tightened the chain and the fact that the axle nuts around the sprocket were loose...I think the sprockets were not aligned. I'm going to see if I can remove a link form this chain (I guess I'll have to drill it out? That sound right?) If I can get a link removed, I'll put the chain back on and then try and figure out how to make sure the sprockets are aligned. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

 

Okay....so I was able to remove a link from this chain. I found out the master link that fits it is a 428H (while that seems a tad wide its the only one we found that would work). Now I need to go home and put the chain back on and align and adjust everything. Should be fun. any pointers for getting the sprockets aligned?

Im glad to hear you got it worked out jdr00ejr, i usually use a grinder to take a link out of a chain. And all the chinese quads I have came with a 428 chain. not sure about the H part but if it works, use it. And I talk to myself all the time. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]
