Default Eton IXL 40 Rascal quits

My daughter has an Eton IXL 40 Rascal, which we bought used, and I have become very frustrated with trying to get it started and keeping it running. Some days I am able to pull the starter 2-3 times and get it running with no problem. Other days it will not start at all. When I get it running, it will run for anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes, and then just quits, as if I pushed the off button. I first thought it was debris/dirt in the fuel line, so I put a fuel filter in and cleaned the carb. I thought it might be a dirty air filter, and cleaned that. I took out the sparkplug, and it was not fouled, but replaced it with a new one anyway. (I did check for a spark and it was ok also) I then thought it might be the "safety switch" on the back with the pull cord, so I by-passed the switch, with no change in the bike's behavior. At this point, I am ready to get rid of the thing and buy something else for my daughter (my wife has other ideas of course.) Any other ideas about how I can fix this little atv? Are these common problems with this model?
