Like what kind of trash? You could put some panti hose over the intake hose. Just cut a peice and use a zip tie or rubber band to hold it on. This will keep alot of junk out.

Welcome to the forum tuckersjeeps!! You could try mounting a UNI pod filter directly to the carb.

UNI is a manufacturer and a pod filter is a filter that has an intake tube built into it. It clamps directly to the carb where the intake hose to your original airbox was clamped. You will have to measure the diameter of your carb's intake to determine the size of filter you will be needing. I used a 1 1/2" intake tube UNI on my FX-150. As far as water operation, I would use a two stage (has a foam sock filter over the filter itself), and make sure your inner filter is well oiled. But I would not submerge it above the filter.

The reason it didn't run right was because with the new filter, it was able to breather a little easier. This allows the carb to flow more air into the carb alittle easier. When you change the amount of air coming into or out of the motor, the jetting in the carb must be changed to match. When you said it seemed like it was running out of gas, it was in sense because it wasn't getting enough fuel for increased amount of air. If you add more air flow without more fuel to match, it will create a "lean" condition in your motor. If you keep running it this way it will melt a hole in the top of your piston and blow the motor up.
You didn't say exactlly what you changed about the intake so I'm not sure how the flow of the new intake changed. I can tell you this, if you put a UNI filter on the carb, you will definatelly need to increase your main jet quite a bit. The stock main jet in your Eton is most likely a 82.5. Once you put a UNI filter on the carb, you will need increase your main jet to ABOUT a 100 or so. Every machine(even two of the exact same) seems to have its on personality when doing this so I can't give you the exact number for sure. Most likely you'll need a main jet between 95 - 110. The pilot jet system most likely will not need to be changed but you may need to tweek your air screrw a little. Most of the time the pilot jet/air screw will not NEED to changed for this type of mod in itself.
I do also want to add that 2-strokes are way more finicky about changing air/fuel mixtures than 4-strokes. Alot times this type of mod change(in itself) on a 4-stroke will not require a jetting change. So, "god Ilove2ride" most likely will not need to change their jetting with the new UNI filter because their machine is a 4-stroke. Once installed it will be ready to ride(most likely) and they will see a little bit more performance. You on the other hand will have to atleast change the main jet to match this better air flow because you have a 2-stroke.
General rule of thumb, if you change something like this(intake or exhaust) and do not have to change your jetting, then the performance gain will be minimal at best. If you have to change the jetting(getting bigger) then you will see more of a performance gain. So, the bigger you have to make the jetting, the more performance you'll be gaining.

thx elroy1, this 2stroke has (is)a learning protect for me. but ut fun.
what i did was plumbed the air intake up in front of the handlebars using 2.25 ID hose. (theres s box in the frt boby just in frt of the handle bars)just because know when doing mod.s one knows its trail and eror , i used a filter off a honda (old parts bike). i was shure that it would work ( binging ,that i build jeeps for a living) , but i must say never had dealings with 2 stroke engains. being how the boys like the mud , figured this would be my best answer , the hidden box would protect the flitler and the plumbing was high and seald , ill get some jets and see what happens
