I have a friend with a 12 year old honda 400 fourtrax 4WD, it runs well, everything appears to work, and it has a winch and bags on it, do you guys think it is worth the $1,000 asking price? I am thinking about getting myself an ATV.

Everything "appears" to work or it does work? Does it smoke while running? Does the engine sound strong or like its on its last limb? How does the oil look (clean, dirty) ?
Would you feel happy with it after you purchase it? Are the tires in good shape? Anything loose?ie bearings, bushings ect...

The 2nd post has valid points. If all that is good or acceptable, I'd say go for it!
My 250R frame is 18 years old and the motors I have are out of 85/86 years of ATC.
12 years isn't bad.
Have fun!

I just sold a 10 year old fourtrax 300 4X4. I got $2650 for her. You can't get much for a grand these days. I guess what I'm saying if its pretty good shape go for it.

4WD and other goodies. If it runs good and everything works, buy it. It's a great deal. And if you don't want it, let me know and I'll buy it.

Its a Honda!!!
If it smokes, rigs are cheap.
It'll prolly need some bushings, bearings, oil change, etc. All of which can be done fer $500. Then ya got a total of $1500 max. Try to buy anything as dependable fer that kinda money.
