Default CDI Recv limiter on AC DVX50

I understand that a lot of kids quads have electronic rev limiter (circuits?) on the CDIs, and I was told by a Kymco rep how to cut the (green) rev limiter wire or unplug it on their Kymco 50s and 90s. And, my daughter's 2006 Arctic Cat DVX50 has a lot of Kymco parts, so I expect it also has the same type of rev limiter on the CDI, but the wires in and out of her CDI do not have the same setup as the Kymcos. However, there is a green wire and I was told by another dealer that ALL green wires into the CDI are rev limiter circuits, and thus I should just unplug it.

Does anyone know if this is true, and is there any possibility that I could wreck something if I run the bike with that green wire unplugged?

Thanks for any help!

I don't know how different they are but I have an 05 Kymco but it is a 2stroke(wish they would have stuck with the 2stroke) But on ours there was a green wire loop that I cut. I was prepared to crimp it back if it messed something up. Nothing got messed up but I didn't notice that big of a difference. Where I did notice the difference and don't know again if Urs will be the same maybe ask Ur dealer, But our clutch had a sleeve with a shoulder on it and that kept it from completely engaging and limited top speed. The part I put in was called a race boss sleeve and was like $14 just needed an impact wrench to spin the clutch nut off. If Ur model has this limiter Ur dealer should know and be able to get the part.
I love how ours runs know and with my boys Hotwheel radar we clocked it at 28mph and it gets there quick. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback, MeIsCheech (as in Cheech and Chong?).

Fortunately, in my daughter's Arctic Cat, there was a separate little ring on the clutch shaft (which I believe is called a variator restrictor), which we simply removed, thus allowing the clutch to fully open. This increased top speed from 9 mph to about 14 mph, and then we put 19" tires on to replace the 16", and this boostd the speed up to about 19 mph.

Since her mom's '07 Eton Viper 90R goes about 30, I was hoping that I could remove the green wire from my daughter's Arctic Cat and boost the top end up to where her mom's is. So, I'm disappointed to hear that cutting yours did not make much of a difference - how many mph would you say it went faster?

I'll have to do this next weekend when we are up at the cottage again, and report back.

Best regards,

AN UPDATE: I did in fact try cutting the green wire and - it wouldn't even start after that! So, I had to wire it back together and it runs normally again. However, I am still left with not knowing how to eliminate the rev limiter circuit in the CDI box. Does anyone know? I'd appreciate any help at all.

I just got my son a left over 2006 DVX 50 and yes it is Way to slow for him. My dealer contacted Kymco and they are sending me a CDI box off there scooter modle. This will get rid of any rev limites. I will be picking it up this weekend so I'll let ya know what the part # was and if it worked. The price was $70 bucks.

Hey, thanks, DCR -I will look forward to hearing about the new CDI box.

Did you also know about the variator restrictor in the clutch assembly? It is totally easy to remove on the 2006 DVX 50 - just take the clutch cover off, carefully remove the variator, and in behind on the shaft itself you will find a small brass ring about the size of a wedding ring. Slide that off and reassemble. The top speed will increase by about 5 mph or so.

Then what I did was take off the rear tires and rims (and save them for when you sell it), and buy some new 10" rims with 4-110 bolt holes (so they fit the existing 4-100 bolt pattern), and put on some 22" Mudlite tires. Not only will top speed go up again to about 20 mph (at the sacrifice of a bit of low-end power, but this quad has lots to spare), but your clearance will also go up and the bike will perform magnificently in the mud. You will have a fabulous quad that will last a long time.

The only other thing you might want to do is add wheel spacers to compensate for the increased height of the quad. And don't forget the rider will get more muddy with the big tires, but hey, that's half the fun!

Enjoy!

Hey, DCR, did you get your new CDI box, and how is it working out?

Well the new CDI box didn't work. It wont start the motor, But removing the clutch ring did make a big difference. My son is alot happier with the added speed.I'm going to check into it today to find out if maybe I just got a bad CDI or they sent me the wrong one. I'll let everyone know as soon as I find out.

You may also want to pull the ring out of the carb slider. Pull the carb off and remove the slide. There will be a "bushing" between the cap and the slider. It's kinda difficult to compress the spring with bigger hands, but it can be done. Also since your carb is off check the intake for a restictor. Next you want to pull the pipe off and check for one at the exhaust flange. Finally, and I don't know if the 50's are the same, look at the silencer end. Should look like two small pipes, one inside the other. Cut the smaller one out, BUT ONLY DO THIS ONE IF YOU RE-JET!! I have an 02 artic cat 90, the main jet is a 77.5 and I went up to a82.5. Look at your jetting and take the original with you to your parts guy, he should be able to set you up. Usually a jet cost about $4.

Kildea, when I spoke to the AC rep, he told me that the new 2006 4-strokes were bult differently, and that they don't have restrictors on the carb and the pipes, etc. like they did in previous years. Just the variator restrictor ring and the electronic rev limiter in the CDI box internal circuitry. But I may be misremembering here - did you hear anything different specifically about the 2006 DVX 50's? (Which, by the way, they discontinued after the 2006 model due apparently to Chinquad competition!)
