I dont own a Raptor bike but I was just curious if the raptor is a maual shift with an auto clutch. With a couple of my ATCs I have experienced a similar prob where I would let off the throttle, shift then give it gas and it feels like it slips for a while then engages. To fix this problem I adjusted the clutch.

hammertyme,
I would tend to agree with godIlove2ride that the clutch is sticking in the disengaged position and that the transmission is not going into neutral when you are shifting. do you notice the shifter sticking or binding in the shift position after you have shifted. if you do not notice the shifter sticking it could be the push lever mechanism (auto clutch) on the inside of the engine stator cover. even if the shifter returns to its unshifted position the push lever mechanism could be sticking and causing the clutch to remain disengaged. I would recommend removing the engine cover on the shifter side (shouldn't take very long) and checking the push lever mechanism. It could simply need lubricating. Has the auto clutch been adjusted. you could try loosening the nuts that hold the auto clutch adjusting screw and turning it slightly. the scew adjusts the push lever mechanism. if the screw seems difficult to turn it could indicate a push lever problem. I would recommend getting an engine cover gasket before you remove the cover as its hit or miss on whether the gasket survives the cover removal. look on any of the web sites where you can buy ATV parts and most have an exploded views of the different components (www.worldofcycles.com). select the clutch view and you can see the mechansim.
