I would like to thank this forum, the members that contribute and LT80. I bought a 89 lt80 a few weeks ago that was in pretty bad shape. I found this site, did a bunch of reading, asked a few questions, got good answers, bought some old stuff on fleabay and did some wrench work. Now we have a fiesty little quad that a young Summer guest will remember forever. Learning new things and getting positive results is a good thing. Thank you all!

Can't tell you how many times I've had a problem with our mini, and I came here to post a question, but didn't need to. A quick search and you can usually find a post from some other poor bugger with the same problem you have, and the answers are already there for you.

Don't want to beat it to death but the gift keeps on giving. Gonna waste some bandwidth here but it just pumps me up. A cousin brought a 11yr old guest for Easter weekend (and we didn't forget what Easter is really about). Just finished building this old 89 LT80 and like magic a test pilot shows up. Watching this young fellow go from a wide eyed rider to an intense driver was a joy for all who watched. It rained most of the weekend and he went home with a bag full of muddy clothes and a DVD as evidence to back up his tales and memories. As much fun as he had, I've had more. We found this quad with a broken axle & dead battery. The owner sold us a new Durablue +3 axle and a new pair of titan rear tires for $350. He threw in the quad for free. We found this site and read a bunch. We followed links to clutch info. We stopped by the McDizzy site for some two stroke ideas, and went to work. Oil from the tank had filled the case and came out of the carb intake and exhaust pipe when removed. We soon had parts all over the floor & found a little weed eater motor deep inside :-) We sucked the oil out and the crank & rod bearings seemed good. The cylinder looked good as the piston had been done just before the axle broke. We took .020 off the head, conservative but what the heck. Cleaned up the ports & changed things just a little. Put in some Boysen reeds & opened up the reed cage quite a bit. Opened up the stock carb to the point we had to trim the top of the slide to open all the way. Put on a cheap, used DG pipe. Suspect it's only good for looks & sound but that's a good thing for kids. Couldn't afford real performance stuff. Took 2 rollers and a bunch of grey putty like stuff out of the front clutch. Figured the grey stuff was really old grease. Drilled some weight out of the rear clutch shoes & cleaned everything up. Polished the clutch case cover just for kicks. Found a new battery for $31 & free shipping. Put 2-1/2 spacers on the front hubs to match the durablue and turned the freshly painted rims around for a little extra width. Looks pretty cool. Put it all back together and hoped for the best. This thing is a blast. I have no idea what a stock lt80 performs like but Cuz works for a dealer and says this isn't like stock. Don't know, don't care. I deserve all the flaming you can hand out but we're tinkerers and can't be sorry about that. It wouldn't rev with the porting, reed cage & carb changes so I drilled the main jet to .040. All is well. A little rich but safe to run wide open at the dunes (I hope). The young guest we built this for won't arrive till after school is out but it's now tried and true. My son & I have learned a bunch, risked very little and had a blast doing what we probably shouldn't do. Thanks to all again and don't try this at home :-)
