Default No low end

Hello, I recently bought my boys a 50cc atv. It wasn't new. I only paid 130 for it. Well, the problem is it doesn't seem to have any lugging power whatsoever. We live out in the country and I find myself pushing it way to often. I have read some on here and it seems that isn't normal. So where do I start? It doesn't have any stickers left on it so I don't know the brand. My kids are 4 and 5 and only weight about 40 pounds. It cranks up every time without issue and runs great if I loosen up the screw and open it up. Thanks in advance for and comments.

Is the air filter clean, and the connectors between it and the engine in good shape?

Lack of air, or too much air, can cause loss of power. I'd check those first as potential problems, and easy to fix.

I'd check the compression.

I'm not much of a mechanic. How can I check the compression? I can handle the air filter.

You would need a compression gauge. May have to borrow one or have a shop check it quick.

If the compression is low what does that mean? Does it mean I have to have it rebuilt?

If it is low, you would need a top end re-build.

SMB05 posted this page for another matter, but it also contains info on how to adjust the clutch. Hope this helps.

It may just need the valves adjusted. I bought a 90cc motor off ebay and it had 60psi cranking compression. After adjusting the valves it jumped to around 135psi and runs great. Get the compression checked at least.

How many teeth on the front sprocket? If it has 14 then that is also part of the problem. Going to a 12 tooth sprocket makes the low end feel much stronger. Also it is a 50cc motor, even with the 12 tooth sprocket they wont climb everything there's only so much the little motor can do.
