Default 171FMM engine who makes it ?

sflarider,
That is really odd, that is a first with no engine model number, just a serial number. I did track down the engine family ID xxxxx250AM5 and it comes back to an EPA certification for the company below. This just means they have that family of motor on their ATV's. But it does correspond directly back to them, so who knows. Take a look at their certificates and you will find the 250AM5 listed for EPA certified.

Hey thats awesome. I found out my bike is an 07. Theres a few bikes on that page that have the same engine.
I might just have to get a custom exhaust made for it. It looks just like your engine, but mine dont have the
heat shields cause of the water cooling.

One of the biggest and easiest mods for more low end power would be a sprocket change on the front to a lower tooth sprocket. What is your tooth count on the front and rear sprocket ? Most chinese ATV's are geared for speed and have very little low end torque, a simple and cheap sprocket change can change the whole attitude of your ATV for more low end grunt ! ............................Slydog

"It is out sourced to a engine manufacturer that goes by "cg engine" which I can not yet find in china." A quote of your post slydog. It is interesting to me that the engine manufacturer goes by "CG Engine" because I read in another thread, a while back, that another member believed the engine was cloned after a early 80s
Honda CG 250 engine.

So basically, we all have the same engine. I looked under mine today, and didnt find anything else stamped on the engine.
It doesnt really matter, but it would be nice to have specs. I planned on giving mine away when I got my 250r rebuilt, but Im definately keeping it because I love it.

I would think that with so many ATVs popping up with this same engine that eventually some manufacturers will start making non OEM parts. No doubt people will want them.

Default 171FMM engine who makes it ?

I did some more research after reading "Coloradotrailrider"'s post about the CG250 and here is what I found........

ENGINE TYPE : 167FMM (ZS167FMM)
ENGINE NAME : CG250
ENGINE SIZE: 67mm bore x 65mm stroke = 229.2cc
COMPRESSION: 9.2:1
COOLING: air cooled
POWER: 15.4hp and 12.9 ft lbs of torque (converted from chinese kw and nm)
MANUFACTURER : ZONGSHEN

Zongshen also made a 171FMM engine and here are the specs........

ENGINE TYPE: 171FMM (ZS171FMM)
ENGINE NAME: CG ??? (not listed)
ENGINE SIZE: 71mm bore x 58mm stroke = 229.6cc
COMPRESSION: 8.7:1
COOLING: air cooled
POWER: 14.5hp and 12.4 ft lbs of torque (converted from chinese kw and nm)
MANUFACTURER: ZONGSHEN

It appears Zonghshen made an OEM version of the 171FMM for their own use on their 250cc ATV and were never intended to be sold as retail engines, like the ZS167FMM and others listed on their website.

Here are some links to pictures of the Zongshen 250cc engine so compare for yourself....

The Zongshen ZS171FMM engine specs above are for the base model and companies can modify the bore and stroke to their specs, like it appears Hi-bird does with their ATV's. If you look at Ebay for Hi-bird 250cc you will find one with a 248cc emissions badge and the description clearly says 67x65mm which equals 229cc engine !

The Hi-bird 250cc with the 67x65mm bore and stroke has the same specs as the ZS167FMM engine above just with a different side cover, but only opening it up and measuring the bore and stroke would be the only sure way to know what engine you have.

The Taotao ATA-250 D has the 171FMM engine with a 233cc emissions tag, and the Vbike has the same looking engine on both the V4S and V4D ATV's with the 171FMM engine that I believe to be Zongshen made.

This is all I have for now but this gives us some specs to go on and an idea of who made our engine's...........

Very cool slydog. That puts me out of the list, because mine is water cooled. No worries though.

Default 171FMM engine who makes it ?

Did some more research and found some specs for the CG250 version water cooled like the KMD 250 has......

ENGINE TYPE: CG250
ENGINE SIZE: 63.5mm bore x 62.2mm stroke = 197cc
COMPRESSION: 10.0:1
COOLING: water cooled
POWER: 13.4hp and 9.95ft lbs of torque (converted from chinese kw and nm)

They always say on the Ebay ad's that the air cooled has more power, well by these numbers that would be correct but not by much. They cranked up the compression on the CG250 watercooled 197cc engine and got a very respectable 13.4hp with a lower torque rating of 9.95ft lbs of torque. It makes sense to me from a mechanic standpoint that if you add water cooling that takes more room for the cooling passages so the piston bore should be smaller unless you completely redesigned the engine, which we know the chinese are not known for doing. Link below for a picture of the CG250 water cooled.........

http://store.oohla.com/storefi...116/1170498051304.jpg

So it seems the CG250 is the engine type they copied, then they made different bore and strokes along with air and water cooled to meet the needs of their ATV'S. So "CG" refers to the type of engine and Zongshen is the brand or manufacturer of the engines.

I want to thank Coloradotrailrider, sflarider, and ssgt tanner, along with ghcoe for their help and input on this thread as I feel we have finally got an idea of what our ATV engines actually are............................
