Default No fire at plug

Hi I am new here and just bout a used Hi-Bird 250 4 speed manual.

The guy i bought it from said that he was riding it over the summer and it just went dead. He said it needed a new coil. I have cheacked the plug and it is getting no spark at all.

My question is do you think it is the coil? The part is only 25-30 bucks not too bad I just dont want to keep having to order stuff and not get to ride it for a month or 2. Thanks.

I wouldn't give credence to anybody who sold you a broken quad that is "easy" to fix. If it was so easy they would have changed it and then charged you a lot more for a working quad.

It could be the coil. Or the plug, CDI, Stator, Kill Switch, or wiring. Most likely it is wiring.

I haven't seen a hi-bird. Do you have a voltmeter? Wiring diagram? By chance does your CDI look like this (some other 250cc engines use these CDI's):

If your CDI looks like this then we can measure some things to narrow the possibilites down. Otherwise you *will* need a wiring diagram. Anyone else have one?

Report back if the CDI matches the pic and we'll go to the next step.

Hey, thanks for the help. In the process of looking for the CDI I decided to clean the spark plug and it almost fired then the battery went dead.

So I went to walmart and bout a charger and picked up a new plug. After 2 hours on the charger I drained the gas out of the carb by the screw and after a few cranks it fired right up.

This ATV was sold to me by a co worker that has way too many toys. So I knew he wouldnt screw me.

I do have another question though if you have ridden these chinese atv's alot.

In 1st gear it jumps a bit and makes some noise like the chain is popping until you shift into 2nd then it is smooth as silk.

There is at least 1/2 of play in the chain when it is in neutral, is this normal?
I see just how to adjust the tension but am not sure how much play is needed if any at all.

Thanks again for trying to help.

My quad is a 150cc automatic. I'm going to have to pass the 1'rst gear and chain question on to those who have the same quad as yours and have direct experience.

As far as ignitions systems go I am a lot more comfortable transitioning to other chinese quad engine types since they are very similar in design, and often share the same parts. Plus I work in electronics.

I'm glad you got your quad running.
