Hawk 50 wont start
#1
I purchsed it (used)for my sons b-day. It had a bad battery but would start with a jump. It was fine for a while but then started doing this thing where it would try to start when the brake was pulled. I tried moving some wires then gave up. It has a remote start and kill switch plus a button in the back that has to be pressed to start. I havent done anything to it in a year and really dont know much anyway. It cranks but wont start. Any helpful suggestion appreciated.

It has new gas and a new spark plug. Im pretty sure it has something to do with the wiring or one of the many fail safes it has. Is there a way to hard wire it and go around the remote start box?

On most (if not all) quads with the remote start you can simply unplug it to bypass it. But when you do that you can no longer turn the engine off with the ignition switch - instead you will have to use the kill switch on the handle bar. Also, the remote start box bypasses the brake interlock switch so when starting it manually you will have to hold in the brake to get it to crank with the start button. I suspect problems here since you mentioned the starter taking off whenever you press on the brake. Sounds like the starter button is shorted.
Check to see if you are getting spark by connecting the coil output wire to your old spark plug and ground the threaded end to the engine while cranking. If no spark is seen then check the kill switch connections to the CDI. The kill switch(or switches) must be open for the engine to run. When they are shorted to ground the CDI stops making spark (but the starter still turns the engine over).
If you are getting spark then check to see if your getting fuel by looking for wet fuel on the spark plug after cranking. If you have fuel and spark then a compression check is next. When was the last time the valves were adjusted? This need to be done periodically - and hard starting or no starting is the classic symptom.
