What do you mean by "no spark" when shorting across the solenoid terminals? Are you referring to sparks at the terminals and your screwdriver, or there is no spark at the spark plug?
As Spliffy said, shorting across the solenoid will only start the starter motor turning but it has nothing to do with ignition spark at the spark plug.
Turn on the ignition, and turn on the headlights. Do they light? If so, then short the solenoid terminals with the lights on. Do they stay lit? Get dim? Go out?
Jump the quad to your car battery (be EXTRA careful to get the polarity right because the car will win this battle if you get it wrong). Repeat the above tests. Does the starter turn? Headlights stay lit while shorting across the solenoid?
Do you have a voltmeter? Electrical problems are much easier to diagnose when you can measure stuff.
