Default Which oil for a LT80?

What kind of oil is it that i need to fill the reservoir? Can i get it at Lowes?

Also, i don't know what the original owner used and the tank is a little above minimum level mark so i am gonna fill it some more.

Since i don't know what kind is in it (synthetic, regular?) i shouldn't mix, right?

You can mix synthetic with conventional Mixing Petroleum and Synthetic Two-Stroke Oil - ThumperTalk I have to do it all the time on my sled when I,m far out and the hick store only sells conventional 2 stroke oil.

Thanks.

Can someone tell me if it is normal to have little puffs of white smoke even after the quad has been riddin a while. It's fairly smokey upon crank up but fades down to little puffs after a few minutes. It isn't gonna disappear completely after warm up is it?

Sorry for the newb questions. I know it can be repetitive for older members. I am also using the search in between.

2 strokes smoke betty good from cold starts but improve as they warm up but there will always be more smoke than a 4 stroke. Yours sounds fine.

Reyn,

If your still here I would like to clarify that you know the function of the oil in a 2 stroke motor. Im not intending for this to sound demeaning so dont take it that way......just in this day and age with 2 strokes on their way out I think some people dont understand the difference.

The LT80 is a 2 stroke motor - that means the oil is injected with the fuel and burnt inside the cylinder. Its job is still to lubricate but its different then a 4 stroke because it gets consumed. You dont change the oil on a 2 stroke....you burn it.

Keep an eye on that level......if you run out you will burn that motor up in short order. You need to keep it topped off.

As far as what.....any 2 stroke oil beats nothing. Past that its personal preference. I run Belray.....but any good 2 stroke oil will be fine. I would personally suggest sticking to a 2 stroke MC/ATV oil and NOT using a Marine based 2 stroke oil.

i buy the gallon @ walmart. suitable for marine, premix, and all injection pumps. i think it is around $11. what have i ran it in? '72 -'74 gt750's, rm125, polaris atvs, my lt80, my ody, and pretty much every two stroke i work on. no failures. when you first crank a 2 stroke, the reason they smoke more is that the gasoline has vapored off leaving the oil behind. this occurs in a greater capacity the longer the engine sits between uses. this is a good thing as it preserves your bearings, seals and rings. if just gas was in your crankcase, your seals and the rest would fail sooner. if your 2 stroke has a tranny, you still have conventional motor oil in it. granted, you do not have to change it near as often, you should still keep an eye on it. hope it helps.

The heavy smoke on mine was the result of the injector. Since recently going to 32:1 premix it is night/day difference.
