I've had many welded.
Should be no problem.
I usually have a strap welded on in that area.

ok great, the clutch cover is loose now too, so i guess i'm gonna check if the thread's pulled out or not.

can it be welded together, or do you suggest i pull the engine apart cuz of the heat?

You should remove the motor.
The tranny will need drained or it'll blow fluid all over and the clutchs need to come out so the welder can clamp the case to the bench insuring that everything is flush/straight for the clutch cover.
The threads can be fixxed w/helicoil.
The re-enforcement I use:::
In front of the sprocket (where it cracks) I bend a alum piece sorta like /----\ to fit the case. Plus on top, 2 pieces::
1) along the top above the hole that the long pipe bolt goes thru (2" piece)
2) behind the side cover bolts and butts up against #1 (6" piece)...You may have to grind a lil on this where the pipe goes across.
1/4 x 1 alum.

Good to go.

Default Cracked Case

I to have the same problem....My son cracked his case just last week...We threw all the goodies...pipe, shocks etc. on the backup only to find two tiny cracks in the front down tubes....Gonna get the tubes welded up so he can continue riding...finish tearing down the back up quad..send the frame and misc. parts to work with my brother in law for fresh powder and send the motor and clutches off for a bit of an attitude adjustment!....I would take Jack's advice on reinforcing the case...He's only trying to save you future headaches...Obviously I need to do the same..Nice to see that others are still racing the LT...We love ours and love beating up on the competition riding an antique...Cant wait to see the improvements after getting some work done!...Good luck to you!...Love to see some pics of some LT setups if anyone's gottem?!...Thanks...Jeff

finally made some progress, i bought that third lt80, thought it was a great deal for $200 for an 05, but it ended up being the most abused quad i've ever seen, but i DID buy it just for the good engine case, well of course, the case was cracked too, but very minor, so i had it welded, and started assembly, and paint per my kids request *sigh* lol.
