Default 110cc Gio stuck in gear

Hi, I’ve got a Gio 110cc atv with an automatic transmission (forward only). It doesn’t have neutral or reverse. Now it is stuck in gear and I can’t get it to release. Normally when you stop it slips into neutral and I can push it around easily either forwards or backwards. But now it’s jammed in forewords and I can’t push it backwards. Any ideas on where to start looking or what to check?

Firstly, be sure it is the engine stuck in gear rather than the brakes stuck on, easy to tell with a chain drive as, with a stuck clutch, the machine will move either way easily until the slack in the chain is taken up. If it is the clutch at fault, some have a centrifugal (lawnmower type) clutch, some belt drive types, allow the belt to get slack enough to slip on the front pulley at idle. The centrifugal clutch types have a one way clutch in the centre so the bike doesn't slip out of gear on the overrun, so this could be seized, but usually it is the centrifugal itself at fault.

Thanks. Definitely the clutch as I can move the quad and it kicks forward when trying the starter. Pretty sure it’s a centrifugal clutch, I’ll pull it apart to be sure. Is there any way to repair it or do I just have to replace it?

Often the fault is just a broken spring, however you may have to buy the whole unit anyway. Only way to find out what you need is to take the clutch apart.

Got it apart today, though one of the cover bolts broke in the process. Should be able to get that out. Two of the springs were broken so it’s definitely shot. Not sure if I can just replace the springs, or get a whole new clutch. How do I find the right one? Mine doesn’t look quite the same as the ones I’m seeing on Amazon.

Either go for genuine Gio if you can get it, or find a seller who gives dimensions on the generic stuff they sell, so you can measure up and be sure you are getting the right part. If it is a Honda clone, genuine Honda springs may be the same.
