Hello, I have an rover 90 I got for my kids that was running great. Not when you turn the key, the lights for the gear position do not light up. It will start, but the selector switch doesn't change gears. I'm thinking it's the CDI, but looking for confirmation or experience with this. Get2it has the CDI shown, but no listing. It does appear to have the same connections as other Eton models, does anyone know if they are actually the same? Thanks.

 

CDIs are usually totally separate from the gearchange computer (if it has one) on older bikes. Even Honda didn't integrate them until the 420 model. You need to be very careful with Eton CDIs too, as they usually have "earth to run" kill switches and CDIs, almost all other makes use "earth to kill" systems. Check for wiring problems on the gearchange system first, and learn how it works before swapping parts out.

 

It actually identifies in the manual the CDI controls the shift control system. If I directly apply power to the shift motor it does move and change gears, just no idea what gear it's going to.

 

I don't know the model but work on lots of Honda ES systems, first check that the up/down switches are working, for neither to work, it could be that power isn't getting to them, wire broken etc. That the gear position indicator doesn't work, may indicate a broken wire in that circuit, they have one wire from each gear position to the indicator. On Hondas it is a rotary switch that earths each wire in turn, as all wires and switches would be unlikely to fail at once, the positive feed to the lights would be the one to suspect.
