Exclamation Kazuma 50cc electrical troubleshooting

I have a Kazuma 50cc kids quad. No idea of the history of the machine, just picked it up from a friend. I put a new battery on it, but cannot get the starter to turn over when I push the starter button. Not having a schematic available, I'm just not sure where to start with my troubleshooting. Any help appreciated.

Not sure about Kazuma, (I have the manual on an old computer but not on my present one), but most kids quads have a lock-out to stop you starting the bike in gear and/or without a brake on. Have you made sure it is in neutral (if it has gears) and has the brake light on, when you try to start it. Brake light switches often deteriorate with disuse so if brake light doesn't light (if it has one) that could be a culprit.

As for testing, with ignition on and lock-outs set, test for power on the thin wires to solenoid when you press starter button, one should be 12v pos (usually yellow/red) the other neg. If you don't get 12v across them with button pressed, check which one is dead by testing them against the battery with the meter. Actually a 12v incandescent test light is better than a volt meter for testing, as it tests for power not just volts. If you are getting power to the solenoid thin wires but solenoid doesn't click when start button is pressed, faulty solenoid.

All good tips. Thanks. I've seen other references to quad safeties, etc. however, most of them refer to a handbrake which must be locked. This particular model has a foot brake, and I cannot see any wiring that could possibly be a safety interlock. Anyhow, I'll keep hunting and see what I can discover.
