The piece that holds the rollers (sliding face)::Look where the rollers run,if gouged, then replace it.Other than that it should be fine.
Also check the llil plate that contacts the rollers for gouging
The fixed face::This can get awfully abused, but look at how much it is worn with a strait edge.If you know a machinist, you can have him re-face it (13 degrees).
Yes you need rollers
Check the bearings in the rear clutch while your in there, sand the contact pads "LIGHTLY"

Thanks for all the help and this weekend I got the quad fixed. After trying everthing else I swaped the drive faces and it worked like new. It was the drive face with the rollers that was bad. The rollers kept turning sidways. and it only took a year . I see a new posting today with the answer to all the troubles I had. I hope it will help someone else. I packed the rollers with a heaver grease to help keep the rollers in the right spot to see if that would work and it did, I'm hoping this will keep working untill my new parts come in. thanks Doug

Your problem may be in the carb somewhere,BUT,I'd try taking the flywheel off and sanding it and the stator. This has fixxed this type of problem before.
If thats not it,,then I think the carb "MAY" be bad. A bad carb does what you are expieriencing
I'd like to know what size jets you have in. I looked back and seen that you inspected the reed,so thats not it.
