tranny failure...
#1
well, my quad locked up tight in 1st gear, the tranny filter is plugged with shavings. there were absolutely no warning signs, it's an 03 speed with less than 50 hrs on it. one question... i removed the clutch side cover and the pressure plate and the plates, next i removed the snap ring, shouldn't the inner part of the baskets slide right off of the shaft? or is it part of the basket itself? any suggestions on what i should do with this thing next? do you think it is repairable? any help deeply appreciated

well, got around to tearing the quad apart. hopefully it is not as bad as i thought originally, the 3 bolts that are close togother at the upper front of the motor all came out, no locktite on any of them. 2 of them were laying in the bottom of the side case. the other is wedged behind the clutch basket, and is what was keeping it from turning, also wedged against the part from the shifter, keeping it locked in gear. the only problem is that i can't seem to get the clutch basket to slide off the shaft. any suggestions, on how to get the basket off the shaft, do you think it may have damaged any other things behind the tranny plate? my email is jaso440@yahoo.com. i didn't get your pm oldsandman, because my address is diff. now. also, didn't ever get the center part of the basket out either. i have been trying to use a screwdriver to beat the bolt into one of the holes in the basket, but haven't had any luck so far. on one other note, i had never cleaned the oil filter below the headpipe, and i checked it out tonight, no traces of anything in it, it was very clean, the tranny filter was plugged though. any suggestions, please email me or reply on here, thanks

If the threads in the holes on the tranny plate and crank plate are ok, then you might have gotten lucky. However, they tend to beat the threads up when they decide to leave, so I don't know how likely that is. You'll have to heat the clutch basket to get it off. The clutch baskets are tough to get off even without a failure such as this. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.
