Well, I knew someone would say that, so that's why I included production quads like the Raptor and Banshee in my statement..

However, 250R parts prices haven't really changed much that I've noticed since it was in production & very few of the parts have actually been discontinued, so they're still production items - parts prices were never near the levels that 400EX parts are - then figure in inflation & you really get the picture.

Also take a look at 300EX OEM plastic pricing compared to 400EX (or any other 300EX part for that matter) - the 300EX has been produced much longer, has sold more units, is still in production, and is a cheaper model, yet replacement parts prices are vastly more expensive.

400EX parts were actually cheaper when it was a first year production machine, so the number of years in production argument loses some validity. Honda has actually raised prices on high demand items like steering stems as more and more users are purchasing parts.

What it really boils down to if you really want to analyze it is, that the 400EX and most all of it's chassis parts are manufactured in the United States. The 250R, Raptor, Banshee, and most other sport quads are still made in Japan. This is the reason for the big parts price discrepency. I assume they are paying high import duties imposed by the govt that are then passed along to us.

Take the rear hubs, for example... On 99-01 400EX's the 300EX hub from Japan was used (same part number). The best price you'll find on one is around $100. For 2002 they moved to a 400EX specific hub, pricing is around $25 for this hub yet they still fit and look the same as the older, more expensive hubs and will even retrofit to a 300EX which still lists the expensive hub for 2002. Small difference in part numbers, big difference in pricing.

Since the Cannondales are manufactured in America, parts prices should be reasonable, although it's probably to be expected that they'll be higher than 400EX prices for two reasons - production numbers and materials..
