Cannibal gearing

We seen a moto at the Batavia honda shop and it had a 38 tooth rear sprocket. The explanation was as follows. A bigger rear sprocket gives more torque and lower top speed in each gear. Smaller tires also give you a slower top speed in each gear. A smaller sprocket brings the speed back up in each gear while making it easier to keep the front end on the ground during the hole shot and all the other times you have to shift. The head mechanic Bob is going to race it this year and he said himself that unlike the other Dales it's hard to get it to wheelie with a 38 tooth sprocket. He said the only way he can get the front end in the air is with both knees on the back of the seat unlike the other Dales which a simple blip of the throttle will bring the front end up in any gear.

When I mean low. I mean the smaller spockets compared to the cannibal. smaller sprocket=more top end

Here at cannondale we have gearing discussions about once a month and man do we always leave the conversation confused! Basically a 13/38 on the moto is equivelent to a 14/41 on the moto. We spec'd it with a 14/40.
Remember that going smaller in tire diameter means going smaller on the rear sprocket to keep the same ratio. Going smaller on the front sprocket means going bigger on the rear sprocket to keep the same ratio. There are some cool calculators you can download that will tell you a lot of information.
