Raptor or Cannodale for the dunes??
#1
well looks like we sold the slow pos honda 400ex, now instead of gettng the 450 kit for my z looks like she is gonna have it and im gonna get either the c-dale or raptor. i like the power of the piped Z400, loved the ride and seat even better but i want more power. does a c-dale with map and pipe have more power than a piped jetted raptor??. i know theres a little more maintence but its fun to work on them. i know if i get the raptor a lsr +4 axle will be required.
1. how much are the 03 sexy black cannibals going for otd. if its around 6k ill probly go with that
1 1/2 lol. does cannodale offer factory financing now and what are the rates.
2. what pipe do you reccomend... is there one for the 03 yet would like to get a slip on if the power is not worth the extra money of the full system.
3. how is the suspension on the 03 canninbal? is it better than my Z.
4. what map do you reccomend for the dunes?
5. is it a better choice for the dunes than the raptor ( the raptor should have more torque shouldnt it? ).
6. should i go used? on a 02, but they did fix a few issues on the 03 and i love the black
7. i know there is the glamis but can you get it with straight paddles?
thanks guys would love to hear from raptor and c-dale owners

the piped and mapped dale is faster than the raptor. the 03's have fox shocks and steel wheels. a new 03 will cost you about $ 6800 or you can get an 02 with the ohline rear shock and itp aluminum rims for $ 5800 to $ 6200. also i know where you can get a 03 limited edition ( stars and stripes ) for $ 6800 out the door. it has the ohline rear shock and aluminum rims. they changed the a-arms for 03. you can get the black plastic for about $ 250 if you want black that bad, the black will look good new but will show the scratches and scuff marks more than the red or gery of the le. hands down the dale is a better quad than the raptor. i heard a rumor and we know how rumors are that the raptor may be discontinued after 03. this came from a local dealer here. it all comes down to what you want and what type of riding you are gonna do but the dale really has you covered in all areas.

I would say it comes down to your long term plan. Do you leave your quads motor stock internally? if so the Cannondale is the way to go. If your one of the people who has to open up the motor build bigger and bigger than the Raptor will take it in drag races. You will of course need to spend alot on a-arms, shocks, axle.
My Speed cruises the dunes just fine and I wouldn't trade it for the Raptor on a dare. Easy to run the dunes on, handles them great, powers up all the hills, easy to move around on coming over razorbacks.
GLAMIS supposed to have a Larger Radiator, and special mapping. I run the v-paddles on my Speed and have had no problems getting upi hills and even winning a few races.
Black plastic in the sand, NO WAY.

I have an 03 Speed with a pipe and Moto mapping. I only dune with it and it is the best dune bike I have ever owned. I traded a DS 650 with a stage 2 kits and my Speed has way more power. I rode in the dunes for 4 days last weekened. Usually I am sore and beat up, not this time. It just handles so nice. Don't worry about mantaining it because there is nothing hard about it. If you test ride a Dale I think your choice will be easy.

<< i heard a rumor and we know how rumors are that the raptor may be discontinued after 03. this came from a local dealer here. >>
Yea right! The Raptor will be around for a long time!! This is Yamaha, They don't discontinue their best quads like Honda, a company that's run by a bunch of lawyers with no ba!!s. My local dealer has new raptors every time I go in, they move off the showroom quickly. The Raptor will be stalking their prey for a long time!!
Is the Glamis built from the Speed or Canible?
Is there a difrrence besides the paddles?
I don't think angled paddles are the way to go for high HP quads, If the tires are the only diffrence get a regular C'Dale & get Extreme Haulers. Angled paddles spin too much & that can dig a hole instead of hook up IMO.
Do the C'Dales have a overheating problem when used in the dunes or trails or just recreational riding? My Raptors fan only comes on when riding slowly, as long as there is air moving through the radiator running on a hot day in the dunes is not a prob, but it probably doesn't get as hot as Little Sahara OK as is does in Glamis in the summer.
It seems like Raptors & Shees are the most popular quads at Little Sahara, I've seen very few C'Dales & not many DS's. Now I only go on the off weekends (less traffic & smoother sand) but threr are still 150-200 quads on the off weekends.
I don't know why this is it's just an observation.
The Raptor is an exelent dune quad, All I've done with mine is a full Sparks X6 pipe,Pro Design adaptor W/ K&N & outerwears, Dyno Jets, Extreme haulers in the rear & mowhawks in the front & 3" wheel spacers ($78) & I can keep up with all but the most outragous Shees playing in the dunes & I have no problem with them on trail rides (the power band thing).
Yes I'd like better front shocks but thet're not in the budget at this time (saving for an enclosed trailer) But that would be the case for most people unless they had a Blaze or Moto.
The torque of the Raptor is a big plus in the dunes, I can idle up to the base of a dune & just power up it without having to take a run at it.
It's hard to beat the Raptor in tree shots, you always have power ready wheh you have to make a couple of turns in the middle of a dune to dodge limbs.
Either the Raptor or C'Dale would work well in the dunes, but they would require diffrent riding styles, I can cruise the dunes at a easy pace or hammer through them, I think the C'dale would be more like a Shee where you have to have precice control of the power band, A relaxed pace would be tougher. A diffrent map may help that though.
I can go Dune running, Sand draggin, Or trail riding on my Raptor with just tire changes (& Replacing the shocks for struts to drag race).
It's a good all around quad for the places I ride & my riding style.

Yea there's nothing hard about it if you never, clean the air filter or change the spark plug (removal of front plastic),change the trans filter (removal of rear plastic & shock), or adjust the valves (removal of engine!!).
I can do a full service on my Raptor (Adjust valves, New spark plug, change oil & clean filter & clean the air filter in about 1 1/2 hours, I do all that every 20 hours.
How long would the same service take on a C'Dale???

Moose,
I'm not sure if you meant to bag on the Cannondales you rarley see or not but damn.
The GLAMIS is based on a Speed. It has different tires and mapping. I like the Angle tires as drag racing isn't my main concern and being behind striaght paddle on a cruise is asking for roost.
Cannondales don't have a overheating problem on trails or in the dunes. I rode Glamis in 95 degree and didn't have any problems. If you let the radiator get filled with mud and stuff, like any water cooled quad it could overheat.
As far as the DUNEs are concerned everytime a Raptor takes off they are trying to control the wheelie that ensues. They have a lighter front end that wants to come up. Don't you agree? My Speed will wheelie easly but I can keep the front end down.
The Olhin shocks are way better than the stock ones on a Raptor or Banshee.
As far as power, I can walk up to the face and pull the hill also. Stock for stock you know the Cannondale has a better HP to weight ratio.
With the tree shots, there is that light front end again. Two weeks ago a guy was going up a hill and the Raptors front end came up and over on him. He rolled down the hill with the Raptor right behind and on top of him. They called 911 to get him out.
The Cannondale will cruise or rip, your thumb decideds. The stock map has a very linear power to it. You don't think your going that fast at first. The better suspension on the Cannondales will allow you to ride longer, jump higher, hit whoops harder, and handle better than the Raptor.
As far as service, you haven't seen that many Cannondales so how would you know what it takes to service them.
Air filter Cannons remove front plastic Raptor remove back plastic and seat.
Oil changes Cannons Drains from three different spots, so with a large oil pan you can do them all at once. The motor oil and Tranny oil are different. You don't have to remove any plastic for this. The Cannondales also had a metal screen filter never had to replace it. The tranny oil is easy to change also.
The Raptor motor oil is the Tranny oil. Oil filter is how much each time?
Valve adjustments Yes you have to pull the motor to do this and it takes some time. You don't have to do it every 20 hours, most of them are fine after 50 huours and longer. I'm not recommending this just an observation.
Spark plug Cannons are fuel injected how often do you need to change this? rarly. Moose says he replaces his every 20 hours 5 buck and an oil filter each time.
Jetting, Raptors two carbs to jet each time you change something, or ride at differnet elevations. How long does that take, SANDGOD did both of his in one hour. Cannondale nothing to do it's FUEL INJECTED.
Moose, I'm not trying to start any stuff, but both quads have their good points and bad points. They even out on all accounts. Except that a stock Cannondale is faster than a stock raptor. LOL

I just did my first big service on my cannibal and I thought it was pretty quick and easy. It took me about 2 hours to change the engine oil/filter, spark plug, and tranny oil. I also cleaned the air filter and tranny filter which does NOT require taking off the rear plastic and shock. I even cleaned the secondary oil filter near the rear of the engine (by the rear shock) without removing the plastic OR the shock. Haven't adjusted the valves yet, so I don't know how difficult it will be....
Raptors are nice. The one thing I don't like about them is that they are a little tipsy. I am sure spacers or extended a-arms/axle would help. The power is great, though.
The dales are also a very good all around bike.....just change tires. Mine works great on the track, on trails, and in the dunes.

No I wasn't bashing them at all!! C'Dales are very nice quads.

Everyone has there choices on tires. But I get around much better with the Extremes, I just didn't like the angled paddles. To each there own. & roosting is fun!! HAHAHA!!!!!
I mentioned cooling because you said somthing about the Glamis having a larger radiator.

My first trip yes that was true. but after coming off a 86 250R I had to completely change my riding style. After getting used to it no more problems, As for tree shots it's just a matter of weight & throttle control. I have flipped before with no injuries to me & only a tweeked tie rod end & that didn't stop me from riding the rest of the day. If you don't crash or get stuck occasionally you just aren't trying hard enough!! LOL!!

Actually you C'Dale guys told me what the service involves by me aking questions & reading your posts.LOL!!
You only take off the seat (1 lever) & 6 clips (no tools needed) to remove the stock air filter on a Raptor.
Since I do all my services by the factory recomended intervals I got a Scotts reuseable oil filter ($100) so in no time it'll pay for itself.
As for the spark plug I have never Needed to replace it I just do it while I 'm adjusting the valves because it's cheap & easy to do.
Yes it takes me about an hour to jet but I had to do it twice since new when I put on my pipe & that's because I didn't follow Dynojets recomendations & bumped the jets up 1 size until I had the fuel/air checked on a dyno just to be safe.
I'll admit I'm a bit **** about servicing my quad But I have been working on my own stuff for over 30 years. If I had a C'Dale I'd do all the matinence per the factory recomendations so that's what I use to give my opinions not what someone else would do. So to me yes the C'Dales are high matinence compaired to my Raptor. It's just the way I treat my equipment.
<< Moose, I'm not trying to start any stuff, but both quads have their good points and bad points. They even out on all accounts. Except that a stock Cannondale is faster than a stock raptor. LOL >>
I wasn't trying to flame either, I was just giving a dessenting opinion so dunerunner026 would have something else to think about.
As far as the C'Dales being faster, I've drag raced FX400's, Canables, & speeds & except for the FX400 we are pretty even, I've never had a problem beating the FX400. I'm sure the Blaze & Moto would be diffrent but at that price they should!!
I don't MX or CC race (too old & fat LOL!!) or I would have looked a lot harder at the C'Dales. But for me the Raptor was a better choice.
The C'Dales are fine quads & were 1 of the quads I looked at when I got my Raptor.
The Main thing that steered me away from them was the complexity of a computer controlled FI in the dirt, dust sand, mud & water. But they seem to be holding up well. Now the time involved in matinence is a drawback but They are nice quads.
