Color of plugs?
#1
How many of y'all do plug checks? If so what color are they. I can't seem to get a golden brown. Machine is a tyrant though and I'm not fouling. I'm using the map select kit with mostly my own maps. I never got a "good color" off of the stock maps either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The trick is to get it good and warm then put a brand new plug in start it up and do your run I will go up to third gear at whatever throttle position I am checking then hit kill switch and stop take plug out it should be tan on in the plug on the ceramic.I thought about rigging a small gas tank up to make it easier to get the plug out for testing. Some guys have hooked up a O2 sensor and a voltmeter to take readings that would be a cool setup.Four strokes are real forgiving they usually wont run right if to lean.Going too rich will wash your cylinder and wreak the motor but you would see it smoke out the exhaust.

Hey Dubya, you might have to adjust your injector offset until you get the color you like. Raise the number up for richer and lower for leaner in .05 steps. Like 1.1 to 1.05.
Pretty much leave the injector flow alone as that is specific to your bikes injectors. Maybe raise the stock injector flow number up 1 or 2% just once for injector polishing. Like 2500 to 2550.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Guys,
Jim. I was told injector polishing is a "myth" that is floating around the EFI ATV and Bike world. To me it holds true and makes sense but the gentleman @ Optimum have told me it is false. Any adjustments made to injectors which improve engine performance are because of changing motor conditions, not injector polishing.
This is quite an interesting topic for discussion.

I dont know about the injectors but the throttle cal does change I'm sure the throttle plate eventually takes a seat slightly sharp edges wear a little. You would think the same would apply to the injectors.

It could very well be a myth for a better lack of knowing why to adjust the flow rate. Why a lot of dirtbikes have been getting slightly richer and having stalling problems I'm not sure. It seems some people have really had to lower their offset a lot to get a good plug color and they end up bumping their offset a tad to compensate.
I know I changed my flow a tad because I was having to lower my offset more than I felt comfortable with. My stock numbers were at 2500/1.1 and I'm at 2550/.85 and the bike starts better, doesn't stall anymore, the plug looks much better over the black thing I had before and I can feel the power difference.
