Here in Wyoming it is legal to ride an ATV on public roads as long as the ATV is plated and has all the same equipment as a motorcycle. Including insurance. Only licensed drivers are allowed to ride an ATV on any public road or trail, (so legally you have to be 16 to ride an ATV on public roads or land). Also we are allowed to ride double.

I dont know about other states but what you have to watch for doing things near paved roads here in Alabama is the fact that the state has a certain right of way that starts at the center of the pavement and extends out beyond the edge of the blacktop. You may "own" the land on a deed but in that zone they have jurisdiction...too bad lawyers fees are more than fines.

- No riding on public roads
- No riding anywhere unless specifically designated for ATVs (meaning: no riding at ALL except trailpass and 1 or 2 parks)
- Helmet required at all times
- ALL ATVs must be registered with the DMV
- If you ride on property that you do not own, ATV must be insured.
- Must be 16 or older to ride 250 or larger.
Maybe more, but that's all I can think of.

Once I was riding with a group at least 20 ATVs and dirtbikes(most over 40 years old) and my friends chain fell off his bike, so i pulled over my quad and (SHUT IT OFF), letting the rest of the group pass. Finally, after about 5 minutes of trying to put his chain back on(very jammed), a cop walks down the trail and threatens to arrest us and makes us walk our bikes(mine a 450lb utility quad) 1/4 of a mile to the next street, where, what looked to be the whole force was waiting. I was cited for, get this, "Underage Operation of a Recreational Vehicle without Adult Supervision"Could you tell me at what time I was in operation of my quad without adult supervision????? I got towed($125), and fined up the ***(including an 8 month, alternatitave to prosecution class, with juvinile car thiefs!!!!) And they let the rest of the group pass through without any problem because they were with adults!!!!! WTF!!!

Please look at this. The law states that you can ride double if the seat is firmly attached. Hope this helps.

ok. I should change "No riding on public roads" to "No riding on public roads unless access has been granted specifically to allow ATVs". You could probably count the communities on one hand that allow this. Comsider yourself VERY lucky to live where you do.
If a cop saw you riding double and didn't give you a ticket, how does that mean that it's legal? I've seen people blow stop signs and red lights in from of cops and they didn't pull them over. By your logic, it is then legal to run red lights and stop signs? I think he was either being tolerant because you live in a community that sees the benefit of allowing ATVs or he was too lazy to write you up. Not knowing the law is never an excuse for not obeying the law.
Come to the Capital District with your ATV and you'll be lynched before you even start it up! Not really, but it's still pretty bad here.

It is without a doubt illegal to ride 2 people on one quad in NY unless it is a quad designed for 2-up riding(like A/C's TRV or one Bombs 2-up machines).Trailblazerguy you just got lucky thats all.You could have been given a ticket. The Trooper must have been in good mood.
