It's really just a yearly OHV tag/sticker. I have never been asked to renew my ATV registration. My bike I have to do every year, but it's also street tagged. Makes it easier to get back and forth from the trails for a quickie.

(Yes, you jealous bastages, I live that close... )

I also have issues with why we are singled out for all the legislation, while the dirt bike crowd that rides right next to us on the same trails do not have to deal with all this...That is all I ask? If that makes the rules makers take a hard look at dirt bikes in the process, then so be it...they should step up and pay their own way too. Iam not against registration, or rules, or certifications etc... all I ask is that they treat everyone the same.

In many counties now Dirt Bikes are not allowed on the same trails as ATV's, Clark County, WI for example there is a $225.00 fine for riding a dirt bike on the ATV trails. This is in part because Clark County's trail system includes many routes and in Wisconsin a Dirt Bike is still considered a motorcycle and in order to operate on a road( ATV route) your motorcycle has to be license and you have to have a motorcycle endorsement. They have made a dirt bike trail in Clark County which does require a $3 daily user fee only open to dirt bikes.

Jackson county Wisconsin requires Dirt bikes to purchase a trail pass for $8 a year and then they are allowed to ride with the ATV's

Laws are changing and in my way of thinking we(the government) singles out the dirt bikes because they are not registerable in Wisconsin therefore are not able to operate on a roadway(route) .

It is also concerning to me to think that there are absolutely no regulations concerning operating a dirt bike on a trail. A 5 yr old could hop on a 250 and its perfectly legal, perfectly stupid, but I know some parents who think its perfectly ok as well. I don't know why Wisconsin doesn't require a registration for them, you would think it would just bring more tax dollars into the state. Along with registration comes regulations

I'm not sure what trails are availiable to motorcyclists in your state....but the arrogant groups up here feel that they should ride all 3,000 miles they do now (of which, many are MOTORCYCLE ONLY)....and have the next trail we might ever build be open "again" for their use only !!!.

And the atving community just sits back and watches it happen!

I have been saying for years now that somebody has to slap these guys in the face with the realization that the motor between their legs is no different than anybody else's.....and if they don't want to ride the same limited and invaluable trails?....then somebody needs to expose them for the selfish bastards they are
.

".....If that makes the rules makers take a hard look at dirt bikes in the process, then so be it...they should step up and pay their own way too....."

I have not met one person in this great country of ours who is willing to stand up against the "all powerful" AMA and their cronies....and that fact allows these people to treat atv riders any way they darn well please.

" I am not against registration, or rules, or certifications etc... all I ask is that they treat everyone the same.ATV's are on everyone's hit list.. due in large part as a result of the wild and crazy antics that many display. Another unfortunate fact here is that parents use them as a baby sitter way too often, and are not aware of the dangers they represent until after someone gets hurt. I think there is a lot that could be done to fix that.. and even if I have to work WITH the CPSC, I just hope we can keep their minds open to change......"

I'd work with the "tree huggers" if I could convince people that I belonged to an organization that was SERIOUS about coming down hard on the people you mention above......yet as I've said time and time again......that organization does not exist today and there is absolutely no interest in the atving community of forming one.

"..I have no idea why legislators are so taken by one group's opinions over others, but it appears that they are a lot better organized, and they are established mainstream now..."

The organized atv members we have up here in Michigan wouldn't make a pimple on the butt of most cyclists and snowmobilers I've run in to to date. If they're not thinking about how they can establish a non-profit which pays for their fun or allows them to make a buck tax-free......they want to belong to a club who prioritizes group rides with bumper stickers, t-shirts and weenies (these people up here won't even do a ride for CHARITY, for gosh sakes).

"... But I also think it is crazy to think that rules established over 10 years ago have remained un-changed since they were introduced....."

I am battling with the DNR right now over their proposal to draft a 10 year ORV Master Plan using data that is sometimes over 10 years old....the atving community?....absolutely no interest shown in this fact or the drafting of this plan.....PERIOD.

"..Our kids are following the rule of nature, and are not only getting larger than we were at their age, but also they seem to be able to handle much more challenging situations than we had to handle when we were kids. In short, they have changed too.. So it is natural to think that the rules need to be revised to reflect that...."

Our DNR is solvong that problem by yanking the kind of hands-on training we've been hosting in our neighborhood; giving instructional credentials to anybody who can pass a quiz and shoving as many kids as they can get into auditoriums for "reading only" certification......this all happening as the riding community could give a crap less..

".....and that is how we get legislated out of existance... because the lawmakers do not see any dissent coming forward.I suspect we will not dig another channel here, but maybe we can divert enough water to get noticed, and let them know there is a dissenting opinion....."

God bless your thoughts, dragginbut....but unless somebody else besides the few we've witnessed to date are willing to fight these people?....we're going to have one heck of a time even diverting that water.
