Flood of anti-ATV material on the news.............

I have noticed several recent anti-ATV pieces on the TV news, both local and national. Anybody noticed the same thing? I think there is an orchestrated campain going on here, which the leftist media is glad to be a part of..............
This is being disguised as a "SAFETY" issue regarding kids on ATV's, but it really is the extremist environmentalists/socialists pushing a hidden agenda of a total ban on everything of which they personally disaprove. In the new socialist agenda (now that communism has failed world wide), all public land is one huge "wilderness area", where no humans are allowed to ever go.

Yeah, reconranger, I just a saw piece on the local ABC affiliate here in Boston the other day. It was disguised as a pice on safety of ATVs and kids. And get this, it was done by the Consumer Product Safety Comittee (i.e. Safety ****'s).

Not meaning to get on a rant but this crap just makes me really mad. We just had an article in the local paper about ATV safety and kids under the age of 16, and I live in a small crappy town where if a store puts up a new awning it makes the front page in color. It said something about the rise of severe accidents and deaths caused by ATV's are up like 10% or something stupid. I think that if parents would halfway watch thier kids and not buy a 12 year old that has never even been on an atv a Raptor or something similar that this problem might not occur. It's not the quads fault that there is some inexperienced person on it that thinks just because they have it that they are automatically a pro rider. When in fact they barely know how to take off on it and don't know that there are individual brakes for the front and back ( on most atvs ). Same would be true if you gave a 16 year old the keys to a high powered car. Chances are it is probably to much to start out in and it will probably be wrecked. Also, with the explosive growth that the atv market has seen since the late 90s more accidents will occur. More people operating an atv equals more people getting hurt on an atv. Thats a simple fact. I blame the people responsible for putting little kids on big quads. Stupid people, I love how it is never their fault when they buy little Timmy a 12 year old kid who is 5'2" and weighs 103lbs a Grizzly 660 that has over 30Hp capable of speeds around 70mph and weighs in at just over 600lbs. They wonder why the Grizzly rolled 6 times end over end and happened to throw Timmy 15 feet up and 60 feet out possibly having the atv land on him once or twice when he tried to take a 160 degree turn at 50Mph. It is not the quads fault, if the parents would watch over the kid and maybe not have bought Timmy a 660cc, 600lbs quad he may still be alive. Arrogant people, accept responisbility for your own stupidity.
These people should be taken out into the woods and ran over by a Sportsman 800. I choose the 800 simply because it weighs so much and it would leave some nice tread marks on these people.
I feel better. Sorry if this offends anyone but it is the truth.

My boys (age 11 and 12), are just graduating from their 90's onto the 250EX and Recon 250. The 90's are large bikes for kids, but alas they have both outgrown them (their knees hit the front fenders). But, the 250's are still a big jump for kids their size! Even though both boys have years of experience riding long, nasty cross-country rides, I am making them act as if they are starting over like beginners, on the new bigger bikes. They are going to start out on level ground and short distances, and work their way up from there. We all, always wear full safety gear, all the time!
On the news you hear them say that quads have to be controled because "there are so many of them". Well, if there are so many of us, we should be weilding some political clout!

Ish, I totally agree with you. Just got back from Pismo this morning. It's amazing what you see out there. Seen a group of about 6 quads riding together. They looked like rentals...and two of the quads each had a passenger. I about stopped and asked them WTF were they thinking? But I figured I'd let the Rangers do it.
I seen serveral kids on bikes that were too big. You know the ones. You're not quite sure if the kid is sitting on the seat or standing because their legs are stretched out reaching for the pegs and foot controls.
And I haven't seen much on the TV or news around here though. But I don't read the paper completely. Catch the highlights and that's about it. And I don't really watch the TV news programs. OHV use is on the rise and people remember the ATC events of the 80s and it's easy to point back to that for the anti-OHV people. So they are going to cover it more. Just wish we could get some more positive coverage...but then positive stories don't get much attention.

It looks like there might finally be some positive coverage - it was an atv'er that found that missing Boy Scout in Utah.

'damn straight it was.... I can't help but think the outcome would have been much different if it were not for the ATV's being present and helping cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. Too bad most media couldn't bring themselves to highlight that the ATV does have it's positive points too.
A lot has been said in the past regarding parental responsibility, making wise purchase choices, safety training, the CPSC guidelines etc. I think we all agree there is work to be done. I say we forget the environmentalist issue and concentrate our efforts on the above. Just about all of the ises revolve around training or lack there of as the core problem. This is something that each of us CAN change and make a big difference in the safety margin with.

hey everybody........unfortunately its not only the kids gettin hurt on atvs, just today i read in the paper about a 22 year old college grad that bought an atv for his job, and crashed it into a telephone pole and yes, died.
probably wasnt wearing a helmet (cuz he suffered head and neck injuries), was riding on the road, probably going too fast and the worst part was that his mother said it was the atv's fault! common sense people!! another incident occured on a recent atv poker run-there was this wicked steep hill that most people went around-but this one guy goes up it and is leaning to the back of the quad!-he flips it back down the hill, on top of him with his face and his skull cap type "helmet" squished in the mud-bruises, blood, busted polaris, the whole nine yards-so when it comes down to it-----wear your safety gear and use COMMON SENSE

Ish416- know exactly what your talking about. Maybe 6 or 7 (dont know, its one of the two) years ago there was a place near my house you could ride, and two kids got on a little quad with no helmets and went up the steepest hill he could find. flipped it backwards killing his little 3 year old brother. It got the place shut down and was all over the papers saying that quads were death traps. this is just one of the many instances that often occur.
I started out on a 70cc ATC. My dad put a governer in it so i couldnt go fast no matter what happened and he made me just ride around the campsite until i got the hang of it. He did the same thing for me when i was 5 when he got me a yamaha breeze. He taught me a few things though too. He always told me to check the area and always look behind me before i turn, and just the basic fundamentals. But it doesnt seem that is happening in all these stories. People just dont use their head and it comes back to bite them in the A$$.
