you always need to clutch unless you have an override

i hardly ever use the clutch after i am moving. just need to find the rpm range it shifts best in and it will slide in gear each time with no problem. when i race my suzuki shifting without a clutch is the only way. if you use the clutch you it will hurt your time in drag racing. as long as your tranny is syncronized mesh you can shift it with out the clutch.

I thought you didn't need to shift because atvs (and motorcycles) have constant mesh transmissions, not because of synchro mesh?

that sounds good to me jensUK something mesh. i used to use the clutch until some of the other racers let me in on not useing the clutch and it really improved my 1/4 mile time. went from high 10s to low 10s. i have drove some trucks that the only way to shift without grinding the gears was to not use the clutch or double clutch when you shift and when you double clutched you lost to much momentium on the hills. ask some of the racers and get their opion too. i've seen some that don't and some that do.

Re: double clutching...I've been doing that in my car, but mostly because I think it makes me cool. And downshifts are oh so pleasant. :-)

I've been trying to search the internet for a definitive: "Here's how a constant mesh gearbox works, and this diagram explains why you don't need to clutch between gears, while you do in other types because of this"...but I have yet to find something like that. So if anyone's seen it, please let me know!
