Snow sledding behind a quad
#1
There is an old topic from three years ago but I wasn't able to reply to it.
I would like to pull my 4 yr old (maybe a 2-seater with momma assisting) nice and slow around the neighborhood. There aren't any hills worth sledding in my neighborhood so that's why I'd like to try pulling it with the quad. I'm on a sport quad so do you hook the rope to the grab bar or what? About how long should the rope be? I don't want it too short so that the sled eats the quad when slowing to a stop but I don't want it too long that the turns are overly wide.

I did the same thing for the neighborhood kids with a boat tube, it was a blast. We used the tow rope from the tube looped through the rear grab bar and back to the tube, maybe 30 feet between the quad and the tube. With 30 feet, you can swing them wide but not so wide that they hit the curb if you take the corners on the inside. When the beer started flowing, we used the entire tow rope behind my 4x4 F250 and only let adults in the tube. Many wrecks, no broken bones, but the boat tube ended up in the trash. This year, we're going to try the wakeboard without any fins:-)

i think about 10 feet should be good just dont come to a dead stop from going about 50 and it shouldnt come that close to the quad. The friction of the snow on the sled should slow it down good enough if you stop gradually .I tried the same thing except with some friends and a homemade sled down a limerock road and through some atv trails. I have never ridden in snow but have them dress extra warm and if you have any extra goggles they should probably where those. As to where to tie it if you can,tie it as low as possible maybe around the axle carrier. i have a tow hitch and it worked perfect. The grab bar might pick it up a lil in the front but it should be fine if you gradually acelerate. also dont for get raines and HAVE FUN.

I would use the grab bar on the sport quad. We use the Uts to pull the kids around with about a 10 - 15 foot rope. Don't go too fast, you're going to look and feel bad if one gets hurt.
Last year there were a couple guys in town pulling a tube around and they had a few beers and switched to a truck pulling the tube. They were whipping around in a parking lot and got too close to a car. The guy on the tube hit the car and broke his neck. Died instantly. Take that for what it's worth.

We use about a 15 foot rope tied to the grab bar. It works great as long as you dont stop too hard. Its also fun to load some friends on the sled and just hammer the throttle and watch'em get covered in ice and snow as they get thrown from the back.

If you are going to haul tubes ,sleds etc. around with a quad or snowmobile. tie the rope down low, that way during swings or sudden stops of the item being hauled there is less chance of pulling the quad or snowmobile over. yes this happens all the time and usually there is some damage done to machine or people. anyway the people behind can always enjoy the exhaust hitting them in the face, use the longer rope and drive slow.

we always got a regular watersking rope and used it at full length. if the rope is short the riders always wound up with snow and ice kicked up by the quads or trucks rear wheels in the face. a little longer rope alleviated this problem. Ice and snow will get kicked up even if you are real careful

i would do this but i cant even get my quad out of the shed we just got 28 inches of snow and i can get it out of the shed. also u think the cops would be mad if i did this on the somewat plowed road?? cuz there isnt any parking lots around here and i rode last year in a snow storm but only for a little. thing is my quad is loud so i dont no if people would like it too much but hey think i might try next storm.

i was out for hours on end in that storm, and since nobody was out in cars, i was racing people i didn't even know who happened to be riding too! it was fun, and most of the time, as long as the roads arent really well plowed yet, most cops don't mind it.

We used to use about a 30ft rope and a lid off of a grain bin. They're round, so they'll go any direction. Man, that was fun, though it could have had something to do with the fact that I was 5 at the time. Ever since then, all lids have been needed to cover grain.
