I've been working at Vons since the strike started (owned by Safeway) and they're paying me $17.90 hr plus I'm working 6 days a week and making $26.80 on the 6th day. I say let them keep whining!

I think the strike is dumb and unions suck.

Here the ppl on strike are blocking the entrance to the parking lot. They are blocking income to the other businesses in the lot. I saw a lady using her baby stroller w/kid in it to block the driveway!

I have no support for these ppl since I saw that.

I used to be anti-union, until I joined one. The unions (most of them) help maintain good wages and benifits for the employees. When you don't have unions you end up with unruly employers (Wal-Mart comes to mind) who don't care and take advantage of the little people. Especially unskilled labor. What do you do when your boss won't give you a raise that you deserve? Walk? To another job with the same set of circumstances? I am an auto technician and while I did make pretty good money before the union, the benefits sucked. The retirement plan sucked, the health insurance plan sucked, and what really sucked is I had to pay for them... For $45 a month dues I get good health, dental, eye, a pension plan that pays more than I currently make a month, and better wages too. Not only did I get an increase in pay but I take home a lot more because I don't have to pay for all that. Everything has advantages/disadvantages but I must say I am better off WITH the union.

I opted out of my union because they were charging 2 hours of my hourly rate, a month, for dues. They weren't doing any more for me, at twice the price, than they were doing for the helpers at half the wage. Besides, in our union, it alowed the worthless people to keep their jobs, when they should have been fired, AND they got to get raises for doing nothing to deserve it. As far as the supermarket strike goes, the union reps are a bunch of crooks. The people that work for the supermarkets have STILL not seen a proposal or offer from the supermarkets, because the union leaders do not want them to see it, at least that is what I gather from the reports I've heard from talk radio. Correct me if I'm wrong. I think it's real sad that the union reps would rather see their people suffer through the holiday season, when they could be back at work with a pretty reasonable offer.

That is a bad situation. Unions only work when they work with the people, for the people... In my trade the useless ones usually weed themselves out due to poor workmanship, dishonesty, etc. Our contract does have an "open shop" clause meaning they don't have to hire from the hall, but all service people must be members of the I.A.M. they also must follow structured guidlines to fire people. They keepthe B.S. at bay, yet don't allow the dead weight to hang around long.

My dad was a Union member. When I was younger the only beer he drank was Coors. When Coors booted out the union, he quit drinking it. I thought that was pretty bad to give up your favorite brand because of what someone else thought. He never did find another beer he liked.

Unions had their place at one time, but that time is not today.

there are advantages and disadvantages. Certainly back in the day unions were needed but now I"m not so sure. I am working (scabbing) at Vons right now and I know the kind of work they do. It is very easy stuff that any unskilled person can do as long as they are motivated. the employees were making up to 18 bucks an hour to stock shelves which is currently what they are paying us. That's a lot of money if you ask me just for stocking groceries. The company wants to cut their pensions in half, which I agree sucks, and charge them a little more for health benefits. Still a pretty good deal if you consider that people working at a grocery store can have benefits, a pension, and make 18 bucks or more depending on their position. There are plenty of people out there with college degrees doing skilled work who don't get what the supermarket employees were receiving. they can make up for part of the pension they are losing by investing a small percentage of each check in a 401k or other low risk bond. Anyway, that's just my .02 cents. By the way, I think the people on strike are really taking this thing too far. I've seen one of them screaming in an elderly mans face, they have threatend us, tried to follow us home and frequently take pictures of us to supposedly send to the union. They are even there at all hours of the night and they are usually drinking. I've lost respect for them and their cause because of these things.
