Default safe keeping?????

we have a pumping station on the 5th wheel so we dont worry about the gas. but if we leave to go on a ride out at dumont just for a little while and leave a bike behind we have to lock it up . sure is a dam shame. we should gather all these thieves up and send them to iraq to help our troops. god bless them {the troops that is}

Default safe keeping?????

I have been wondering about security for the ATV and trailer when we are traveling. What do you chain or cable the ATV to? Seems if you chain to the trailer your just hooking it to a means of transport if it's loaded up. I have a hitch lock but even the best of these can be defeated by hooking on to the trailer with a chain and snugging it up close to the tow vehicle. The idea of the cow bells is a good one if anyone is around to hear them and able to respond. I'm sure going to dig some up.

I wonder if an electronic alarm, something on the line that hardware stores use to secure power tools, with the light cable running through the various ATVs and gas cans would work.

Anyone have any good ideas that would be easily implimented and allow security without having to haul around a half ton of chains, cables and locks?

I sure hate being around people I can't trust but that seems to be the way of it anymore.

I was wondering the same thing. As to whether or not I should look in to getting an alarm. Where would you go to get an alarm that hooks up to an ATV sprocket?

In the garage I put a lock on the disc brake so that it can't be rolled out. I also have 3 dogs that weigh 100 lbs or more each.

At the dunes or desert I put the lock on and chain it to others or my truck.

As for the gas cans being stolen. Put them inside the cab of the truck but leave 1 outside that has your old used oil in it. Let em take your used oil........Hopefully they will pour it in their tank in the dark w/o noticing. Then look for the smoking quad in the morning and smile.

Hey tencubed....there is all kinds of stuff you can do for security..if you want to cough the money up that is!!..for your trailer..since you have the hitch lock..they make the big wheel lock to put on the wheel...if you had one of those...your trailer wouldn't be moving anywhere with that sucker on...they also have these locks where you can lock your quad on the trailer. Its something you bolt on the floor..and its a little swivel u..then you use a special lock that goes on that u bolt thing then to your bumper....I saw all of this at rocky mountain....if you want to check it out..go on there website..and the part number is 90-1117 for the quad lock on the trailer...and TK-100-0100 for the tire lock..your looking at 80 bucks for each..ouch

Quadracer mentioned the wheel locks that are available. Got me to thinking and I have come up with a plan I would like some opinions on. I'll try to explain this in a reasonable manner so bear with me.

The trailer I have for the ATV is just over 6' wide to the outside of the tires. It has white spoke wheels and you can look thru the wheels from one side to the other. Ahead of the axle you can push a 1" bar from one side to the other thru the wheels and over the top of the springs. Now my plan is to take a 1" bar, weld a "T" on one end and drill a hole in the other end. Then I will make a sleeve about 2" long from some square steel tube the same size as is used for a reciever on a hitch and weld a 1" ID pipe inside it. By drilling a hole across this to line up with the hole in the 1" bar I can use a reciever lock to lock the bar in place. Ain't nobody gonna drive off with that trailer!

Now, the trailer is secured. To secure the ATV on the trailer how about a length of 1/2", or larger if you like, aircraft cable with loops in both ends. Just run the bar thru the loops and the frame of the ATV(s) and the whole mess is locked solid.

The bar and cable would be a bit of a pain to store but in my case a couple of brackets welded to the side of the trailer frame would suffice.

Whatta' ya think?
